A ghast waylaid Erthallin and gave him the XP to reach L3/5, so I figured it was time to pick up some help.

As I said before, I like the idea of a full Druid party but I wouldn't want a bunch of pure ones since they'd level slowly. However, with Erthallin being a capable Fighter 3 -> Druid 5, I wouldn't mind taking a pure Druid and perhaps a Cleric/Ranger. The only option for a Druid is Faldorn, however, (deep in the Cloakwood) and there are no Cleric/Rangers available. As such I turned to some Sword Coast Keeper hackery.

I picked up Imoen, who is now a L6 Thief, and switched her to Druid (also L6, since both need 20k XP). With the 3E Druid alignment mod I have, her alignment is legal for this, and she has the needed Cha. I swapped her Int and Wis scores over, however. Since Imoen has pretty good scores, I took a point of Dex and Cha to balance out the benefit of having such a high Wis. Her scores are still better than Faldorn's, but then she doesn't get the Dread Wolf. I was also going to up her health (since Druids get d8/level, not d6) but she seems to have made really good rolls and already has better-than-average health for a L6 Druid so I left it at that.

I actually put her to L5 then leveled her up in-game so that it would fix all the spells and saving throws and stuff for me, then adjusted her HP back.

Her new stats are:
Imoen Neutral Good Human Druid L6
Str 9 Dex 17 Con 16 Int 11 Wis 17 Cha 15
HP: 43
Small Swords * Missile Weapons *

Does that look balanced? She seems pretty capable, though her strong point will be spells, all of which I can already cast.

I'm thinking Viconia might like to be a Cleric/Ranger, too. This is technically an illegal combination for elves, but there aren't many half-elves kicking about (probably because they suck), and making her a Cleric/Thief is popular enough (and what I did last time).

Thanks.

Yeah, I think I will do that, but first I must find some mods list  for BG 2, was asking about that, but didnt get any answers so I guess I will fix it tomorrow.

The more the merrier I say!

Also, congratulations to anyone who beat BG1 with no reloads, and condolences to anyone who died.

It's actually very useful.  As a solo wizard slayer obviously is restricted because so many items can't be used, but it is certainly possible to get as far as the fight in the palace without ever having to save against any spell and I think this fight would probably be OK by leading them upstairs.  Not sure about the fight against Sarevok - this might be tricky, although use of arrows of dispelling might be helpful.

In a party the WS would be a real benefit.  I had mine using darts most of the time on mage types at 4 attacks per round.  Usually in SCS the mage opens with mirror image and the spell failure works through that (and stoneskin).  As a result solo mages would normally not get a second spell off.  There is a big weakness, however, that the spell suppression does not seem to affect divine casters - the in-game information given about the WS seems to suggest it should do, but it doesn't in my set-up at least.  To some extent I got round this by making sparing use of darts of stunning, but also did quite a bit of dodging in and out of areas and rooms.  I also allowed my WS the use of a helm of charm protection (the only modded item used, as some of the mod equipment available is greatly over-powered anyway and other bits can be used by WS when it shouldn't be able to).  Once Biffo had got Spider's Bane, he was protected against hold and charm, which are the greatest dangers from clerics.

Right, time for the next lamb to the slaughter to show her head.  After the rigours of the wizard slayer I'm going to make things easy this time with an attempt at a berserker dualled to mage.  Dualling at level 7 will allow the mage to regain berserker abilities within BG1.

I'm going to allow her to use mod items, which will also make things much easier.  The element of challenge will come in this run from trying to complete BG1 as fast as possible (in game time).

If she gets through BG1 I'm also minded to attempt to take her right through at least to the end of SoA - as I've never done the later portions of this that's unlikely to be possible with a no-reload (even if I were not being careless), so I would probably need to take up SapphireIce101's invitation to the minimal reloads thread..

Contrarie is through Candlekeep.  As a side-bet to myself I'm seeing how far she can get without taking any damage.  In Candlekeep there were 2 potential problems:
- Mendas (from Dark Horizons) is so close to you that it's difficult to avoid him without stealth.  However, it is often possible to get the rats to form a living barrier to him, which Contrarie managed.
- Firebead.  By staying at the door and jumping out when a spell is coming it's perfectly possible to attack Firebead even at 1st level.  The only difficulties I've noted are when he uses minor sequencers (no warning of casting, so need to try and keep him as far from you as possible when attacking) and power word sleep (casts quickly and takes effect instantly, so need to get out the door as soon as you see him start a conjuration spell).

I think you're probably right, but that will just mean that she has to stay at level 7 a bit longer rather than levelling up again if she has the chance.

Contrarie continued her travels by taking out Xzar and Montaron.  Although Xzar posed a slight risk of causing damage Contrarie's throwing daggers would only miss on a 1 (while berserked) and I think were guaranteed a kill if hitting (and they duly did).

On to High Hedge, which has no danger from ambushes on the way to Beregost; picked up Perdue's sword there.  In Beregost immediately headed for Feldepost's and placated Marl before killing Algernon in an argument over his cloak.  This was put to immediate use on the road south of Beregost by charming Isolde (Dark Horizons) and using her to kill all the other dangers on the map.  Once she died Contrarie took her magic throwing dagger, which makes her a formidable opponent.  Using that she had no trouble in clearing the wolf pack from the temple area and she's suddenly up to level 5 without spending any more time travelling from Beregost (both the road south and the temple are zero hours travel from Beregost).

With Imoen's help I was finally able to take on the spellcasting foes I've been avoiding. People like Tarnesh would likely have been easy for my Fighter/Druid, but there was too much risk of some debilitating spell getting though. I actually could have had Erthallin memorize Remove Fear, but at L5 with Imoen a L6 Druid, I simply loaded her up with it as well as Dispel Magic (allowed by a custom mod) and Miscast Magic.

Tarnesh didn't stand a chance. Neira managed to Hold Erthallin, but Imoen was on hand to deal with her. To be on the safe side, I had her Dispel it anyway, and the pair quickly took her down.

However, on the way we had some not insignificant trouble with the law. The Amnish soldiers from last time weren't happy to see us, and caused reputation hits when they died. We managed to lessen the problem by donating money to the Church, but in the process sent most of Nashkel hostile... oops. We're now quite poor, and not very popular. The issue was helped somewhat by saving Hulrik's cow, but exacerbated by picking up Viconia.

I used SCK to change Viconia to a Cleric/Ranger, L5/4 instead of Cleric L6 (same XP). This is not only illegal for her race, it's illegal for her alignment and her stats. However, I think it's actually worse for me to have her with low Strength and Constitution (she can barely carry her armour) so I think I'll keep things as they are.

Thanks to Viconia's Animate Dead spells, we were able to clear a large swathe of Mutamin's Garden. We did have some trouble when we ran into a group of big-mouthed adventurers, who killed my best friend, Korax. In wrathful retribution, I had Imoen Dispel their protections and Viconia Hold them whilst we cut them down.

Erthallin is now L6, and better equipped with a suit of Plate Mail from the Flaming Fist Mercenary we killed. I think there are more basilisks to kill here, but my thoughts are that Sirenes might make better hunting for the time being.

Contrarie has continued cutting a swathe through the Sword Coast.  From Beregost she went down the road to Nashkel, picking up a ring from Lord Foreshadow on the way.  Neira provided a bit of target practice for her dagger before she shopped at the carnival for a necklace of kobold killing (missiles).  On arrival at the mines she took her first rest and then had a brief detour to relieve Greywolf of his sword (most of the time that combat takes a while of running and shooting for me, but Contrarie finished him off in less than a minute with her dagger).  Then on into the mines.  Just walked through the first level, while the second level was cleared without problems.  The first real obstacle waited on the third in the form of the duergar (Dark Horizons), but Contrarie turned them to her advantage by taking a potion of speed and using the extra manouvreability to charm Gorken and the fighter.  With their help she killed the clerics and thief and the initial torrent of kobolds, but then DISASTER struck (well OK, minor setbackPosted Image) as she was hit by a kobold arrow (only damage to that point except for the flame arrow during Gorion's ambush).
No longer being quite so careful Contrarie was hit twice more in finishing off the rest of the kobolds and taking down Mulahey.  The latter fight also got her to level 6.  Then walked back through the mines (less travel time than the back door) and returned to Nashkel to deal with Nimbul.  With money available she then did a bit more shopping at the carnival (potions and amulet of shielding) before returning to Beregost.  Tranzig fell quickly before Silke became the first victim to be magically held by Doufas' sabre.

Grond0: I hope you can make it to BG 2. Your wizard slayer should have made it. You should have known your protection from magic would not help against a basilisk, it is not a mage or cleric, and certainly has no knowledge of the arcane. : P

If I make it to Melissan again and win (which is still a big if at the moment), I realize I will need the up the difficulty level somehow. At the moment debating upping the level to insane or just going it solo. Leaning toward going solo, but I expect to have lots of restarts like you did when you were first going solo.

Just for practice, started a BG 1 elven fighter/thief. He got as far as Neira before he got snuffed. I tried the battle again and if you open the battle at her position with a backstab the rooms are close enough you can run in and hide before she can get a spell off. Then just repeat, backstab, hide, etc. till she dies. At some point I intend to get this guy all the way to Sarevok, to "learn" when he has to do for various battles. Then when I am ready (which will still be a while), do a "live" run.

There's also that trapped in Faerun challenge, which I thought I was going to do but not so sure now. We will have to see when I cross that bridge I guess.

The scroll purports to be protection from magic (rather than protection from spells) and I'm not quite sure what non-magical effect turns someone to stonePosted Image.  Having said that I know there are some other monster special attacks that are not protected against, so you're probably right..

As you noted a while ago, one of the things about solo is how quickly the game goes - so you can soon try out different options if you wantPosted Image.

Contrarie continued her travels in search of the bandit camp.  This was still not visible on the map, so she headed for Larswood hoping to find a guide.  However, chose the wrong dialogue option with Teven and was forced to travel on to Peldvale.  There she was surprised by a group of ogre magi and forced to use her only potion of magic shielding before successfully persuading Raiken to give her a lift.  At the camp used a potion of speed to deal with Tazok and then, to save time, directly attacked the main tent.  That was all over within about 3 rounds - a fireball to open with followed by a couple of daggers to deal with the mage, another fireball and more daggers for Hakt and Raemon before Britik became the last victim with the sabre.  Then ran away from the rest of the bandits quickly intending to go straight to the Friendly Arm, but apparently the bandit camp does not link directly to that, so had to go back to Peldvale first (more time wasted).

At the Friendly Arm Najara and Vallius were waiting.  I could have used an invisibility potion to sneak past, but that would have seemed a bit of a waste (and their equipment is good) so took them on.  Initially led Najara away - even with the dagger needed an 19 to hit her, so took a while to finish her off.  Then came back for Vallius; potions of fire resistance and freedom, together with helm of charm protection reduced most of the danger from her cleric spells, while potion of heroism got to hit down to 18.  Vallius' end gave Contrarie level 7 and a maximum HP roll got her to a healthy 81.  She would have liked to dual to mage here, but needs the tome of intelligence first as pointed out by ussnorway.  She'll need to avoid levelling up again from now on to make sure she can regain berserker abilities.

With money from various equipment Contrarie got the necklace of missiles recharged.  Tarnesh got daggered before he could get mirror image up and Contrarie also returned Landrin's goods and remembered to pick up the golden pantaloons before heading into the Cloakwood .

Contrarie went trekking through the Cloakwood.  She had 2 potions of freedom left and decided to rely on these and not spend the time to get Spider's Bane.  As it happened both potions were used in ambushes on the journey (she still had invisibility potions left for emergencies), but she was able to buy more from a shop in the 4th Cloakwood area.  Otherwise avoided everything possible on the way to the mine area.

At the mines avoided the Arch-druid and took on the party there.  Using potion of speed lured Drasus away and finished him.  When Genthore appeared tell-tale signs showed where one of the mages was casting mirror image and a fireball targeted there killed Kysus.  I didn't know where the other mage was, but he seemed likely to be near Genthore and a second fireball there was enough to finish off Rezdan, leaving Genthore helpless on his own.  Tytus was still a formidable opponent on the way into the mine, but some nice footwork managed to get several guards between him and Contrarie, allowing her to dagger him from a distance.

In the mine killed Hareishan's guards until she appeared and then quaffed a potion of magic shielding and targeted her with throwing dagger until she died.  Then continued down to Daveorn.  To guard against a rapid remove magic and other spell combination from Daveorn and his supporting mage read a green scroll of magic protection then opened up with a fireball.  Dark Sylvia poisoned Contrarie with her backstab and immediately went invisible again, but still died to a second fireball.  After taking an antidote, Contrarie chased Daveorn with her dagger and killed him before the battle horrors could get her dangerously low on HP (she had extra-healing potions in reserve anyway).  Killing the mustard jelly guarding treasure chests gave her enough XP for level 8, but she won't be levelling up.  Then journeyed back to the Friendly Arm, using another potion of freedom against spider ambushers on the way, to cash in her equipment and do a bit more shopping.

Up to this point Contrarie has only rested once in the game, but is still not fatigued.  I think this is because, once 24 hours of game time passes, there is a chance of becoming fatigued based on your constitution score.  However, this chance seems to be based on real time, not game time.  Therefore, although she's now at the end of day 12, the amount of real time spent since her first rest at the Nashkel mines is still relatively small and she's avoided the fatigue trap.

I only grabbed the dexterity and intelligence (for Imoen) books whist doing the minimum required to advance to plot to Candlekeep.

My little sister plans to dual to mage next level and we have been saving up extra scrolls for her.

Contrarie headed for Baldur's Gate by zipping through the ankheg area without stopping and then barely slowed down enough to carve up the elven assassins on the bridge with her dagger of disease (taken from Dark Sylvia this is same as dagger of poison, but with an extra attack per round).  Their equipment will help fund still more shopping in the city.

In Baldur's Gate headed for Ramazith's Tower; a potion of firebreath accounted for him and looting his goods revealed an interesting book.  After identifying this at the local temple Contrarie dualled to a mage and immediately set about learning all the scrolls picked up on her travels with the help of a couple of potions of genius.  She also filled in gaps in her knowledge with scrolls from Sorcerous Sundries, which brought her to within 3,000 XP of level 8 as a mage and the reward for clearing dopplegangers from the seven suns soon reactivated her berserker abilities.  Used invisibility potions to avoid the fight at the Iron Throne and headed for Candlekeep.

At Candlekeep Contrarie avoided the fight with the Iron Throne party and then used scroll of magic protection and potion of storm giant strength to loot the tombs.  Then another potion of invisibility let her walk out unopposed the rest of the way, waving cheerfully at the basilisks as she went pastPosted Image.

Back at Baldur's Gate potions of clarity and freedom protected Contrarie while she chewed through the mercenaries and then the greater doppleganger at the Flaming Fist.  My last speed run failed when I fought Tomoko out of sequence, so made sure that there was no mistake with her this time - minimal cost of a potion of freedom.

The run nearly ended against Slythe.  The potion of freedom was still active so Contrarie was moving slowly and before I realised Slythe had even attacked for the first time he had backstabbed her, taken a potion of invisibility and tried another backstab (I thought I had a screenshot here, but it appears not.  However, the first backstab did 79 HP of damage, so the second would definitely have killed her if it landed).  After healing, Contrarie returned buffed up properly and took Slythe apart - Krystin followed quickly at the cost of a couple of potions of magic shielding (first was dispelled) and a firebreath.

Edit: I didn't learn from the narrow escape against Slythe!  Arriving at the palace the first guard let me inside, but then I mis-clicked in response to the second guard's demand for my invitation and told him I didn't need one.  I think from that point any response leads to death, but tried pretending I was a friend of the dukes.  For some reason that not only led to Contrarie being killed, but the Flaming Fist guard attacked the dukes as well.  As they say: "close, but no cigar."

In my current game I have sent most of Nashkel hostile. Everyone hates me and I'm poor from giving so much money to the Church to try and bribe my way back into popularity. All because I mis-clicked on a simple mini-quest which should have given me a little XP boost... also I then killed a lot of guards, but hey.

Gabrielle final

The run to the finishing line was strait forward enough, mainly due to a certain cloak ‘charming’ every guard I encountered. I did allow myself to become poisoned so as to barter the extra wisdom from Ulbright in the LADY's House then we had a tense moment at the palace when Imoen stepped forward to cast more peons and started the event early… Liia got gang-banged to death in the resulting bedlam however we managed to surround and save Belt.

Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

I did briefly consider continuing with extra content but decided not to delay as the only real benefit now would be levelling Imoen. We managed to flank the iron throne assassins and Gabrielle hit them with a ‘Silence’ before sending in the troops. Imoen had a heart to heart with Tamoko before dropping a ‘Cloudkill’ on her worthless BF. We spread ourselves out to avoid fireballs whilst allowing the peons to do the bulk of the work, only Angelo proved resistant to this plan until Dynaheir dropped his defences… game over!

Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image
The bug report; the new tutu works like a charm with the GOG games , with its integrated patches (Beregost saves & the ‘Greater Malison’ are the two main ones that I noticed). IMO SCS is actually harder without most of the so called improved tactics because you don’t end up bristling with super equipment and extra wands. Minor bugs persist though especially with precast buffs however these are mostly minor nuisances… I didn’t have to open shadowkeeper once this run.
