Great work, ussnorway!

Brief update on soloing elven Fighter / Mage / Thief Syroluin:

Syroluin survived Durlag’s Tower, including fight with Demonknight.

Posted Image
Upon return to Ulgoth’s Beard, he was approached by cultists, who stole Soultaker. Syroluin cleared Beard of cultists and won fight with Aec’Letec using the simplest tactics – drinking Potion of mirrored eyes + casting Cloudkill from scroll.

Well done.

Krap, CG male dwarven assassin.

I sneak past a horde of guards to obtain a quest to return the cloak of Balduran?

Central Baldurs Gate (this pair quaffing tankards in the shade caught my eye today).
Posted Image

Larze takes three backstabs to put down, then I retrieve the cloak of Balduran from Quenash. Marek poisons me for a change, so I grab a tome of wisdom while retrieving the dead body of a child from the dead body of Jalantha Mistmyr. When the child is restored I help a captured nymph then resist a lightning bolt from Ramazith. I quickly sneak past all his creatures and poison him, hiding to end with a backstab.
Posted Image

I show Marek how poison really works, then I go for a quiet read at Sorcerous Sundries. Scar wants me to investigate the Seven Suns but I don't fancy it. He realises the sewers also hold no interest to me, so he reluctantly takes me to see Duke Eltan. He wants me to investigate the Iron Throne HQ.

I'm back in minutes, choosing to sneak some evidence out without a confrontation. Seven to one sounds fun odds but I'll save such folly for another day. It's the same with Rieltar back at Candlekeep.

Shistal turns out to be a greater doppelganger, the dagger of venom interrupting his mirror images and a backstab killing him. The Gatewarden arrests me for murdering Rieltar and Tethtoril rewards my innocence by releasing me into the catacombs.

A Phyldia doppelganger almost kills me, but shadows and poison save me. I can't find the traps down here (sigh) so trigger them one at a time and heal up or rest when needed. On the way back from the second hidden tome a lightning trap almost fries me (4/46hp). I rest, but have to rest again when a copy of Dreppin almost kills me.

I sneak past an Elminster doppelganger, then past Prat, spiders and basilisks. Diarmid gets a backstab but remains amicable until he leaves so I follow.

Tamoko grabs me as I enter the Flaming Fist HQ, then an enforcer chases me. I fail to make the shadows so use a charge of the ring of invisibility. Rashad the "healer" gets a DUHM DPB then three snares. Dead.

The harbour master asks where the beep Eltan is (duh). I return to the FF HQ.

With Duke Eltan safe I rest then track down Slythe and Kristin. He gets a DUHM DPB backstab and as I try to add a second the poison beats me to it. She gets a frontstab, and I collect a cloudkill on my retreat. My next backstab is fatal to her and I now have invites to the coronation (gulp), but I have a nap first.

Greater doppelgangers. A wand of sleep helps but I am being chased and the guards are hemming me in. I twist the ring of invisibility a second time and gulp a blue potion. The guards have killed the chasing doppelganger so I race around the prone enemies poisoning them.
Posted Image

They are all dead. Hang on, one more.
Posted Image

Sarevok attacks and I try to hide. Then I try to run around Belt and two guards. I'm hit, run faster. Winski takes pity on me and whisks Sarevok away but Belt sends me after him.

Best of luck with the final battle.

I noted on another thread recently that the beastmaster is regarded as a weak class.  I can see why the limitations on armour and weapons will provide a handicap in BG2, but the good stealth ability should make it a very strong class in BG1.  Anyway I've never tried one, so thought I'd give this one a quick go.

Good luck Grond0. Since you have never been one, don't you think you should be in a group this time? To learn its strengths and weaknesses, in the safety net of a group?

I found beast masters OK, the extra familiar hp and bow attacks were good, limitations of club or quarterstaff aren't that bad either. Enjoy.

I think I know how to get through BG1 with even the weakest character type (as you've probably noticed there's a bit of a difference between theory and practice of course) and for my playstyle the beastmaster should actually be one of the strongest - I usually do well with stealthy characters and the beastmaster is exceptional at that (stealth went over 100, with boots on, at level 5).

Thus far had a good clean run:
-  in Candlekeep stealth made killing Firebead risk free (level 2).
- on to Beregost and dealt with Karlat and returned Perdue's sword (level 3).  Went on to complete the slime quest, acquire Algernon's cloak and provide a book for Firebead (what do the dead read these days anyway).
- cleared the area south of Beregost with the help of a charmed Isolde (level 4) and returned a letter to Mirianne .
- cleared various creatures from a cave in the temple area (NTotSC) as well as the wolf pack there (level 5).
- travelled to Nashkel, picking up a ring from Lord Foreshadow on the way.  In Nashkel rested for the first time and disposed of Neira and a baby wyvern.
- at the carnival disposed of an ogre and a mage and bought the necklace of missiles.
- then straight into the mines.  Stealthed down to level 3, then charmed some of the duergar and set them on each other.  Gorken survived to the end of the kobolds, although kept coming uncharmed every round or so - which meant Sylvio had to do a lot of stealthing / charming to keep him on my side.  A couple of fireballs broke the back of Mulahey's resistance (level 6).
- returned to Nashkel to pick up a reward and deal with Nimbul.
- just arrived back in Beregost at day 4, hour 20.

Personally, I find I always learn a lot more about strengths and weaknesses when the character doesn't have a safety net. It often forces you to get creative with tactics.

Sylvio bought the Morgoth bow in Beregost, so should be able to slice through enemies like a knife through butter now.  First up was Tranzig - who failed to get a spell off.  Then travelled to the crossroads area (to make the Friendly Arm visible, as this could otherwise not be reached from the bandit camp) and on to Larswood.  Persuaded some bandits there to give Sylvio a lift to the camp.  Went straight for the main tent - a succession of 3 stealthy fireballs killed nearly all the opposition.  I thought Hakt had survived when he ran off scared, but he reappeared before Sylvio had finished looting the tent, which was nice of him.  Stealthed away, leaving the bandits outside confused about what had happened to their leaders.

Arriving at the Friendly Arm Sylvio decided to confront Vallius and Najara - why waste all that equipment?  A potion of heroism got his to hit requirement down to 19 against Vallius and it didn't take long to get the two hits needed.  Strangely for someone dressed in plate, Najara was not wearing a helmet and a single critical was enough to finish her.  Tarnesh went down to the first shot.  Did some shopping and also returned Landrin's household goods and got the golden pantaloons.

In the cloakwood recovered Gurke's cloak and bought a few more potions, but otherwise stealthed through to the mines, just using a couple of potions on spider ambushes.  There, Drasus was criticalled and the wizards and Genthore shot from stealth (level 7).  Sylvio felt tired and so rested for the second time in the game.  Then stealthed all the way down to Daveorn.  Took potions of heroism, speed and magic shielding for this combat; tried to shoot Daveorn down from under stealth, but missed and took a couple of rounds or so thereafter to get through his defenses.  The crony mage, Morgan, was shot down before he could get a spell off and Sylvio then stayed still and visible until Dark Sylvia backstabbed him (and then got in some vigorous retaliation).  I wasn't confident that I had any weapons that could kill the mustard jelly, but the Morgoth bow proved up to the job.

There were no ambushes on the way back to the Friendly Arm, so Sylvio just gave Joia's ring back, traded in his redundant equipment and then travelled stealthily on to Baldur's Gate.  Just arrived there at day 12, hour 22.  One more push should see whether he can run the gauntlet of the dreaded basilisksPosted Image.

Quickly collected the tomes in the city.  In the process of that Marek just managed to get a mirror image off before being shot down, but Ramazith failed even at that.  Then stealthed through the Iron Throne - Sylvio tried to let Faldorn go, but he seemed to get stuck blocking the doorway, so he got shot after all.

Sylvio was feeling pretty tired by now, but as he wasn't intending to do any fighting at the moment he trudged on to Candlekeep.  Avoided the Iron Throne party there, but killing a few spiders while looting the catacombs still got him his last level (level 8).  Still under stealth, he whispered hello to the basilisks and then set off back to Baldur's Gate.

On arrival in the city rested for the third time in the game.  Then used stealth to rescue Duke Eltan - a single shot taking down the greater doppleganger there.  Tomoko also soon went down under bow attack, but Sylvio used a potion of invisibility rather than risking being hit by the golems.

Normally with fighter types I give Slythe a hint of a chance by allowing him to backstab, but this time I didn't want to take the risk so Sylvio charmed a few bystanders to act as fodder.  This had the side benefit of getting Quenash killed without loss of reputation, but I was surprised to see that Zizi the Lovebundle was able to absorb a 54 HP backstab and still only be barely wounded.  Slythe managed to survive 1 shot from the bow, but the second finished him off.  Kristin's disappearing tricks, mirror images and stoneskins allowed her to fend off Sylvio longer than anyone else facing the Morgoth bow has managed, but she still fell without targeting him with spells at all.  Leaving tough-girl Zizi to face the music (she attacked a guard while confused) - still going after surviving a sunfire and multiple guard attacks over several rounds - Sylvio was off to the palace.

Carefully used the keyboard to present my invitation at the palace then Sylvio buffed up with potions of power, heroism, storm giant strength and magic shielding and cast his first spell (bless).  That provided to-hit AC0 of 1.  His first shot killed a doppleganger and 5 more shots saw 3 further outright kills and 2 dopplegangers running in panic (though Sylvio was running round in between shots).  With both Belt and Liia safe Sylvio was quickly on his way to the Undercity.  Avoided the party there, but attempted to talk Tomoko into a peaceful resolution - she chose to die instead.

Inside the temple took potions of storm giant strength, speed, heroism, mind focusing x 2, regeneration and absorption.  That was probably way over the top, but I was in no mood to take chances.  Nothing fancy, just approached under stealth and shot at Sarevok.  He got one blow in, but it was all over in less than 2 rounds
Sarevok was defeated on day 16, hour 7.  There were a few unnecessary battles and it might be possible to do with even less than 3 rests, but I think that my travel time was as efficient as possible, so that should be a pretty competitive time (admittedly helped a bit by having such a cheesy bow).

Before reporting back to Duke Belt, Sylvio stealthily whizzed round some countryside picking up tomes of constitution and wisdom and now finds himself in Irenicus' dungeon.  I have realised belatedly that not resting has caused him a problem in BG2 as he only has his first 3 Bhaal powers - I expected to get the remainder by resting after the Sarevok battle, but this apparently switches their acquisition off.

Unfortunately, Syroluin died one small step from finishing the game. Just prior to final battle with Sarevok, he stepped on overlooked trap in temple of Bhaal.
Stupid me...

Consolations, Vaclavc. I've lost at the Sarevok battle as well in a no-reload. Although losing your way sounds better than another no-reloader. They meant to put protection from petrification on them, but turns out it was a cursed scroll and it killed them.

I could, but don't think that counts as a bug - just gameplay I wasn't aware of.  Overall I'm very happy with that run through BG1, so am not inclined to do anything to change itPosted Image

@Vaclavc: that's a tough endPosted Image, but it sounded like an excellent run to there.

I'm inclined to agree with Grond0 - you lose all your powers once you get to spellhold anyways. The only Bhaal power that has significant impact in my opinion is horror.

Krap, CG male dwarven assassin.

I fail to hide in the shadows of the thieves maze, and have to run into two doom guards rather than let the two skeleton warriors shoot me. A third twist of the ring of invisibility allows me to sneak past them and disable the traps. Interestingly, the ring keeps me invisible while de-trapping so I could have just done this in the first place.

I sneak past Carston and his gang, and hide as Tamoko approaches. (Krap is level 9 and needs 22k xp to reach level 10, not going to happen). I rummage through my inventory to grab a few essential items on the assumption that my armour class is more or less irrelevant for the final confrontation.
Posted Image

(not feeling particularly confident about Sarevok)

I set several traps (until I hit the limit), but after exiting the temple to rest I am attacked by Tamoko so backstab her until she dies.

I realise I have items and buff - scroll of protection from magic, oil of speed, potion of power. Into the shadows and aiming an arrow of dispelling at Sarevok.
Posted Image

He's slow so I easily manage to hide. He blunders into my traps, and although I forgot DUHM I add a DPB.
Posted Image

Sarevok is almost dead so I run away as Semaj bounces spells off my shield. A fourth and final twist of the ring of invisibility seals his fate.
Posted Image

(felt a bit cheesy but he's dead)

Congratulations on finishing Gate 70.

I think the Morgoth bow is added by Dark Horizons.  Description from shadowkeeper says:
Damage: 1D4 +3 per magical missile (no save vs. spell or magic resistance
applied to reduce damage)
Thac0: +3
Weight: 4
Speed Factor: 1
Special: Shoots five magical missiles; bow itself requires no
ammunition; unlimited magic missiles.
The 5 missiles all have the same to hit roll - so if you hit the basic damage will average 27.5.  However, you also get any bonuses applied to each missile, e.g. weapon proficiency, bracers, strength.  With storm giant strength on towards the end of my game each hit rolled was doing getting on for 100 HP (double if critical) and I had 4 attacks per round (2 basic + 0.5 specialist proficiency + 0.5 level 7 ranger + 1 mod bracers).  Having multiple missiles also meant that mirror image and stoneskins disappeared rather quickly.

As I said the bow is seriously overpowered, but it is quite fun as an occasional treatPosted Image.

After failing quite quickly in BG2 with Sylvio I thought I would have one more attempt to get a wizard slayer through BG1 (past those basilisksPosted Image).  This one will be a human, which will make things rather harder, but mean I could dual him if he does get through to BG2.
Posted Image

Seldon won't be making use of any armour or weapons not found in vanilla BG1.  The only mod item I do intend to use is the transformation elixir from the slime quest.  I noticed in my last run that, in combination with draw upon holy might, this would allow him to get strength high enough to access the tomes in the catacombs under Candlekeep.

Thus far Seldon has made a good start:
- killed Firebead (level 2).
- talked to Marl (level 3).
- completed slime quest, removed Karlat, gave sword back to Perdue, killed Silke (level 4).
- returned Mirianne's letter and Zhurlong's boots, talked to Noober, killed Neira, exploded an ogre, terminated Zordral, had Vitiare chase me around the tent about 4 times before finishing him, returned Samuel to the Friendly Arm, gave the horn of Kazgoroth its first work-out against Tarnesh, killed some half-ogres near Drizzt (level 5).

Is he a patched wizard slayer i.e. does his range weapons interrupt casting as well?
