I want to purchase Mass Effect for my PC, but I've read reviews in the past where DRM's have really screwed it over. I'm just wondering if this has been removed.

I've played it before on my friends Xbox, but never finished it...so I would really like to do so.

The various digital download versions, generally, were less badly compromised than the hard copy version was (it has the nasty Rootkit version of Sony SecureROM).

Get the Steam version. The only DRM is that you have to log in with your Steam account. I don't even think you have to be connected to the internet for that.

Nope, hasn't been removed; for most versions, it still needs to phone home the first time you play, and it still has a 5-activation limit. They did release a Deauthorization tool, but that means you have to remember to use it (and of course you won't have the opportunity if your drive dies/is stolen/etc.). Also, while you can get more activations by calling EA, the activation system limit is lifetime, so if you hit the limit you will end up having to call EA the next time you want to install.

The "rootkit" term for SecuROM may be a bit overblown from what I've read, but there is certainly reason to be wary about SecuROM given ways they've screwed things up in the past. I remember they once introduced a feature into it where Windows Explorer would crash if you right-clicked any executable. Supposedly a bug, and they did fix it, but eh...

Anyhow, I'd recommend the Steam version for ME1. The Securom protection was neutered for it. Be warned, however, that the same SecuROM-based activation system is still present in the free Bring Down the Sky DLC - and EA's own deauthorization tools don't even work with it!

Steam has an off-line mode, yes. You may have to launch Mass Effect while in on-line mode at least once before it will let you play in off-line mode, but after that you're good to go.
