I'm having trouble getting the game to start after the intro movie. As soon as the intro movie ends (on full playthrough or escaping to skip it), the game hangs and Vista displays a message that "Dragon Age has stopped working." I'm playing on Vista Home Premium 64 with 4 gb of memory (ASUS G50VT notebook, NVIDIA Geforce 9800M GS video).

OK, I finally have some more information about this. It's NOT the game that's crashing; it's the character creator. I've been playing for a while on my older and less powerful desktop, and I decided to try copying the "Characters" folder from it to my laptop. That's where I've been having the problem, and where I would prefer to play since it's a better system overall. The result was that I was able to resume a saved game on it with no trouble, except for a warning that I needed to re-download my DLC.
So it looks like it's specifically the character creator that's preventing me from starting a game on my Vista laptop, not the game itself. I can start a game on another computer and resume it on the laptop, and it seems to work fine. At least, it does so far -- I'll know more after I've had time to play it a bit more. :)

you may be having a side-effect of the issue that lots of people are having with 8800/9800 and M series drivers; you actually look like you might have the worst of it with both a 9800 and an M. How is the game set just now? Did you try turning the settings down on the game before starting the characters?

JG: Yes, I did all of that. As I said, it's not the game that I'm having trouble running; it's just the character creator. Now that I've copied over the character files from my other system, the game seems to be running fine with all of the graphics settings pegged at maximum. I'll know for sure after I've had time to play more, though (I posted last night just before going to bed).

Could you point me to whatever threads are discussing issues with the 8800/9800/M series Nvidia processors? I haven't see that, and with forum search still not working it's very hard to find anything here just yet.

Thanks -- Andarian

After running into another problem playing on my laptop, I was advised to check the toolset related issue described in this thread. After clearing the specified toolset folders, I can now report that it's solved my problem with launching the character creator as well. So that problem is now solved. :)
