Why is DA2 "seemingly" going to a more Cartoony look?

I can understand the change in story focus with more concentration of one character...with that focus will hopefully come a deeper and personal storyline.

But what I don't understand is the game leaving behind an art direction and style that is original and amazing and one that has helped established DA as a solid IP..?

Why imo take a step backwards and loose the gritty, realistic dark fantasy look for...if the currently released art is any indication, a cartoon look?

Could anyone explain this to me?

Is it cost?

I'd think that the current graphics engine could be "tweeked" a bit  for better optimization instead of possibly developing a new engine and completely different art style.

I just think going from a highly detailed and realistic look to a highly stylized cartoon look (no matter how detailed) is a huge step backwards.

Just mt opinion based on what I've seen thus far. Admittedly that's not a lot...

Would love any info on why the apparent change, if any is available ;)

Regards

Probably because they do not have much time to both do good graphics and good game play

shame really

EA wants to make money fast

I'm going to wait til closer to release before passing judgement on the graphics. For all we know, these are just mock-ups, basic images, not shaded or detailed properly yet.

and i don't think they will make cartoon graphics it would make the games lose its dark fantasy theme.

And where do you know this from?

if I wanted to sell my car, do you think I would take pictures of it while it was most dirty and show them around?

Try selling your car before it's finished being built. The game is still in development, to expect final release quality photos with at least 5 months left before release is just silly.

Let's see what the finished product looks like. I'm hoping for a slight lean to Borderlands's style (if it goes cartoony), but more rough around the edges, much less light, more grime.

Just to clarify, Borderlands's textures are cartoon-like, but their lighting model is very realistic, giving us the "polished concept art" style.

Please note the prase 'for all we know'. And as someone else said, the game is still being built.

There was nothing original or amazing about DA:O's artstyle. It was pretty bland and generic. The only real hints of "dark" fantasy were in the storyline itself, and the apparent lack of vibrant colors in the entire world of Thedas. TBQH, I played DA because of the characters, the original setting, and the great gameplay.

I like it. It's got a Samurai Jack vibe to it.

In the early images we saw for Splinter Cell Conviction, Fisher had long hair and a beard. Those images are just "this is what we've got at the moment" and it looks like all they really need is dynamic lighting to lose the cartoonish look, which will almost certainly be implemented before the release date.

Textures are textures, mesh models are mesh models. Lighting isn't going to change that.

Calling it highly stylized is a bit of an exaggeration. It's not like it looks like TOR or something...

Some of the dungeons looked amazing Ruined Temple, Orzammar etc give the art designers some credit.

That's a screenie from when DA was originally announced. About 2 and a half years before it came out. Not 7 months before.

Samurai Jack had a great universe... if someone made a more "adult" version of that, and made it all geographically coherent, you'd have the best game world ever.
