BioWare CAN do good Real Time Combat. It seems people don't remember Jade Empire at all.

Jade Empire's Combat was cool and all, but tbh I found myself using the same 2-3 styles and ignoring all the rest.

And really it's not a question of whether or not a good real time system can be done, but rather that no one wants it done because it isn't Dragon Age.

Jade Empire was extremely easy, even on hard. The combat was basically

hold down block, stun, then do super kill for power up

rinse repeat

Or once you got the super dual sabres, just use that against everything vulnerable to weapons = instant win

Suggestions with combat:

WEAPONS:

I want more weapon types and maybe skill trees dedicated to different weapons or better yet skills that work more effectively if the user is using a certain weapon preferred for the skill. DA had swords, claymores, daggers, axes, battleaxes, warhammers, shortbows, longbows, and crossbows. That is good list already but the addition of spears, pikes, halberds, and other polearms would be impressive. Ranged weaponry such as throwing knives/axes/hammers and javelins would be also really cool. Spears should be split into two categories too. Shorter spears that can be used with a shield and longer spears that require two hands.

SKILLS: I love the skill tree system they have and an expansion to what already exists would be great. Skills that could work in combination with other party members would be impressive though. For example if you had a party that had two or more warriors with shields and each has a skill that allows them to lock shields and form a defensive shield phalanx. Combinations of skills with other classes would also be ideal. Or to complicate it even further, skill combos that require the user of two or more sword wielders or spear wielders.

MAGIC: More defensive spells! Nuke attacks are fun but defensive magic users in DA feel more like heal bots.

Or use the win button - Jade Golem transformation.

I just don't understand why everyone's resisting all the change. The "Mass Effect 2 Lighting" probably won't strike twice, and BioWare understands that Dragon Age is a different beast to Mass Effect. The game even managed to MAKE the Top 10 Sales in November, and that's just for consoles, At the business side of this, BioWare understands why people like the game, and they want to change things for the people who had problems. I don't doubt that the Dragon Age 2 Console combat will change, but I DO doubt that the people who are naysaying the first news of the game will not enjoy the combat.

So basically this means that you can now waste skills by using them when an enemy isn't near you?

EG talents like Shield Bash/ Pummel are now going to be more like Powerful Swings, and your character won't have to pick a target and run up to them to use the skill.

Seems silly, but I guess it will make the game feel more DYNAMIC on consoles.

You can already miss with any non-target skill (i.e. dual weapon sweep, two handed sweep, whirlwind). This dynamic system simply reduces the positional constraints. I'm sure distance will matter, but angle of attack will no longer force movement.

Almost forgot about that one :)

Jade Empire
Press X to win
Press B to win
Press D pad to win

But seriously I LOVED JADE EMPIRE to death, I'm dying for  a JE2 w/ a more balanced combat system and a full 6 man party

I wonder how the dynamic combat stuff will affect hybrid classes like Arcane Warrior.

hopefully, this time, AWs will have access to some of the fighting talents ( and combos according to that German article ) that Warriors will have. So if I wield a sword and shield......I should be able to have access to some shield talents. Or be able to DW 2 main weapons.........

Plus....maybe this time we'll have a Rogue/Mage hybrid class. In that case, the mage can gain access to some Rogue fighting talents......

That's one thing I found lacking with AWs in DAO. Sure, they could equip armor and weapons. But, fighting wise, all they could do is auto-attack since they didn't have access to any warrior talents. IOW...they didn't really feel like "warriors."

In DA2, with the more "dynamic combat," I want my AW to feel like an actual battle mage warrior. One who can wade into battle, fry some enemies with lightning, bash another one with her shield, or slice up multiple foes with her pair of DW swords......
