So you're all saying that BioWare are going to break their streak of 4 consecutive games with an exclusive organization in them? It's 5 if you count Cerberus.

I know, right?

No exclusive organization. No saving the world. No ancient evil.

I for one am actually liking this new "path" that Bioware is taking.

No secret organization to join, no pressing matters to attend, no huge threat...  So, Hawke may just open a brothel in Kirkwall and call it  day?
I mean, it's also a way of becoming a champion...

You made my day :D

I'm pretty bored with being part of an elite group of world-savers. Why do I need some cryptic organization backing me in order to be legitimate?

As many people pointed out, most players played Dragon Age as if their PC was a power-map, greedy, selfish criminal overlord. but since you're a Grey Warden you can steal, murder people for money, slaughter peasants and generally be an ass and still be considered a Hero of Ferelden.

Where do you get that? The sense I get from various informal forum polls (okay, not necessarily to be taken as absolute truth or anything) is that most people prefer to play 'nice' characters, even if there are plenty of puppy-kicking options thrown in.

edit: well, 'nice' except inasmuch as it conflicts with the desire to be a completionist and grab everything which is possible to grab.

First time I hear about the "hospitaliers".
Who are they?

During the Crusades, they were warrior monks similar to the Templars but not as well known.  Considering BioWare named the Templars(the ones in Dragon Age) after a powerful, international organization of warrior monks it would hardly be surprising if a group named after the "Hospitallers" starting appearing. BioWare has taken ideas from historical events and figures before(like how the Exalted Marches are based off of Christian Crusades for example).

Think it's awesome that BioWare is taking this approach. It also begs the question; just how indeed does Hawke become the MOST important person in Thedas?

As a "militant atheist", that would make me feel as guilty as romancing Morrigan ;)

Hawke does a little shopping, lunches with the girls, enters a charity prize draw to win the title 'Champion of Kirkwall'. Wins. GAME OVER.
Hey Bio, no wonder you can afford cinematics and full VO :P

Oh good, wouldn't want the evil to get stale after all.

Going a bit down the heroic scale then. From a world threatening plague to a city? At least we are not caravan guards...;)

Damn. I thought a secret society within the Templars sounded pretty cool.

Still. Our own legend to make sounds pretty cool too.

I like the idea of not having an official order or team. Maybe Hawke has his own band of thieves/mercenaries/tap-dancing entertainers but the whole 'elite soldier sworn to . . . ' seems a little tired.

Jedi, (last) Spirit Monk, Specter, Grey Warden...it´s not that we had no reasons to expect it. I guess GW are only the others equivalent close to a Blight.

I can't tell if you're being coy or sincere.  Sincere would be kind of awesome, actually.

Regardless, I wouldn't count the Spirit Monk among the other 3.  You never go through the process of becoming one, you were born into it.  You don't even find out about it until around 80% of the way through the main story.

Thanks a lot. The LOTR-esque plot of Origins was killing me in terms of predictability.

If that's the case it'll be interesting to see what the driving factor will be. <_<

So how does he become the most important person in the world of Dragon Age if nobody is relying on him to defeat some ancient evil or unite the land to stand against a greater threat?

Or is Hawke just a total narcissist who only thinks that he is the most important person in the world?

Maybe Hawke joins a secret society so secret that not even Hawke knows about it, and the plot reveals that you have been a member all along! (dun dun DUN!)

Completely sincere.

There are other things you can do aside from saving the world-- as plenty of people griped back when Origins was announced. Not doing one of those three things doesn't mean Hawke is sitting around painting his toenails.

Perhaps he did it like NORMAL Great People: conquest and diplomacy with his rivals to become top dog, instead of falling back on the lazy "chosen one" crutch

I for one would welcome a personal story and quest ala Baldur's Gate (which had no secret societies).

I´m with Yoda here. That doesn´t make a great man. And just diplomacy in Thedas, then the guy/girl is a genius.

No but the whole Bhaal Spawn thing was just as cliched in a "you are the chosen one" way.

I would prefer is Hawke is more analagous to the Hero of Neverwinter: A guy with no special abilities, no secrect societies, no "your father/mother/family was X of Y"

Just a normal guy with ambition and skill who overcomes adversity

I don't mean "Great" as morally uprightous (although a high cunning/persusion Hawke talking everyone under his banner would be a sweet way to approach the main quest that would totally appeal to me. I mean that in real life history there are several figures considered "Great" because of how good they were at taking over other people's stuff. Genghis Khan, Napoleon, Cortez, Alaxander. . . the Great. And all these guys became the "most powerful man of their time" without belonging to secret societies that safeguard against the END OF DAYS or being the bastard children of a god (though both Genghis and Alaxander claimed to be one). It would be great if Hawke is a hero with no "mythic destiny" fine print attached
