I have actually been thinking more about the theory I posted earlier. Thedosians worshipped the Old Gods, who, at one time, had walked the face of Thedas and had taught creatures how to use magic. However, they were also malicious, teaching the Tevinters about blood magic, and that they and they alone were gods. The Maker (whether he is an omnipotent creater or an extremely powerful, benovolent spirit is irrelevant) did not approve of this, and, well, imprisoned them underground. Obviously, they wanted to be free again, and so convinced the magisters that they had the power to defeat the Maker, even though the Old Gods knew that the magisters would not be succesful. Of course, the Tevinters failed, and became darkspawn, drawn to the call of the Old Gods, and went about freeing them.

Awesome, very insightful and interesting!

I really think that something did once inhabit the Golden City, and that something is what the Chantry worships; there is a lot of evidence. Whether it created everything and is omniscient/omnipotent is an entirely different matter.

The maker character if it can be called that, certainly helps us overlook some unexplained stuff conveniently. I agree its hard to believe the maker of all things resides in the fade, but part of the fun I suppose is not knowing whats there.

I find there to be a very interesting parallel between the story of the magisters entering the Golden City, turning it black and unleashing evil, and the story of the darkspawn finding an Old God, turning it black and unleashing evil.  It starts to sound to me like differing versions of the same story.  It's possible the Golden City -> Black City legend is just another version of the story of the First Blight, considering that we are talking about thousands and thousands of years ago, in a civilization with no permanent recording devices.

I don't want to ruin your theories but for me is pretty clear that the maker exists and Andraste was his profet, i find really overcomplicated those explanations that say Andraste was a mage or a demon.

I won't make a comparison between the chantry and the christian religion or won't say I'm atheist or believer to support what I think. But basing on the spirits in the temple, the healing powers of the ashes, the teachings of Andraste etc... the evidence and most logical reasoning tells us that Andraste was a mortal woman and the prophet of the Maker. Other theories are just simple speculation (here we do that pretty well :P) and have no foundation

It's *all* speculation. Even "the Chantry is right".

There is no God but the Maker and Andraste is His Prophet.

Real life is complicated.  In that sense the DA setting tends to mimic real life.

Actually it was that sojourn into the temple for the Urn of Sacred Ashes that made me the most doubtful about Andraste being any kind of divine being. The spirits that ask you riddles are no different then the creatures you find in the fade; shallow sillouhettes of real people clinging to one emotion or another. Like the valor spirit you encounter in the mage origin, those spirits serve only to highlight a different aspect of Andraste's life, like a portrait by a very talented artist. There's nothing holy or divine about the temple at all. It's what I would expect any RCC cathedral to look like if they had wizards helping build it.

The whole ashes thing is weird though. No idea what's that about or why they would even have healing abilities. Random power for someone's ashes to have if you ask me.

Alright I am sold to DA2. But I want a comeback of my Warden in DA3 then at least.

What's intersting though is that Andraste lived about 300 years after the invasion of the Tevintersin the Golden Ciry. I always thought she was the only one who ever spoke to the Maker, so figured she invented the religion. What kind of religion worshipping the Maker existed before the Chantry then?

This all sounds all really odd, with the Tevinters crushing the Elven civilisation, who had gods of their own. And there was the Maker too, yet there was no divine intervention aside from those who entered the Golden City being repelled. Also no information what the Old Gods (Dragons) had to do with it all.

The maker wasnt worshipped until andastre turned up, they used to worship the dragons that are now the darkspawn archdemons

its also worth noticing that the different races have different ideas about where the darkspawn came from.

I just thought that OP's link would be nice to bring up again. It is a good reread for those that have already saw it. If this is against rules i am sorry! :(

Maybe you could have just made a new thread to discuss the timeline of Thedas instead of bumping a half a year old one.

Yeah -- if you've got something to add, open a new thread on the topic instead of bumping a seven-month-old topic.
