I know the mere idea of this is going to cause some people to go into paroxysms, but in a Dark setting I think the possibility of the main character engaging in an incestuous relationship with his sister could make for some very interesting role play opportunities. Not only do you have to deal with the taboo nature of the relationship, but the added dynamics of dealing with a sibling. This is the sort of "pushing the envelope" that I think Dragon Age as a setting is ripe for.
As an aside, I have to wonder if Bioware is going to take advantage of the sibling issue and make Bethany a potential villain at some point. Sure it has been done many times, but still makes for good story telling when done well.

But.. the idea of slaughtering thousands of enemies, covering the enemy in grease then setting fire to them, freezing them to death, or laying traps which pierce them from the floor with a massive spike isn't going to freak you out?sylvanaerie wrote...
While I doubted it would, thank you all the same for confirmation, Mr Gaider. The very idea of it freaked me out.David Gaider wrote...

oh thats a request that had to be expected xD. No srsly as someone who likes reading dark fantasy (mostly german tough) it's a question that i simply ask because i wonder HOW evil i can be. that incest thing in dark fantasy is always something for the REALLY evil guys. so if it was possible, that would tell me aha i CAN become the archvillain. that hasn't got to do anything with perversions, its about ethics, moral and stuff and how evil beings break it.

One could point out that Oedipus committed incest in ignorance, and when he discovered the truth, stabbed out his eyes with a needle. That differs slightly from what's being discussed here.Khayness wrote...
Oedipus is considered a classical. Maybe Dragon Age 2 will be looked the same in a few houndred years.
There are many literature out there way too outrageous for today's standard, read some ancient greek stuff. I've had to read The Symposium, and it was disturbing. Yet it considered a classical.
On the whole 'dark fantasy' thing that gets brought up, I need to ask, what are you reading? I know about A Song of Ice and Fire (although, again, it's clearly established in the books that the people in question are all kinds of f***ed up, which seems to differ from what's being talked about here), but when people go around saying "Yeah, incest shows up all the time in dark fantasy" you have to wonder.

Really ? It's kind of a very important plot point in "A song of ice and fire". I thought that book (series) was kind of what you were shooting for with DA.David Gaider wrote...

Yeah, I read that too. They didn't achieve that goal at all, though.
To be honest, it's an extremely difficult goal.

While I'm not surprised that it won't be implemented, I'm a little disappointed by your response - I had hoped a writer for a series like this would see the potential rp value in what I was suggesting.

in medieval times marrying your cousin was the most normal thing (in some families tough)

Really? You didn't see this coming? Really?
Laws of BioWare games states that if a character has breasts and more than four lines of dialogue, someone, somewhere, will want to romance her.
Three words for you: Imoen. Romance. Mod.
Further proof that BioWare has no idea what its fans want! And that want is apparently to shag your sister.
Great, now I'm starting to wonder too. Thanks, David!

I would like to point out that not only the most vile people in all of creation are going to engage in incest. Sure it is not something that western society likes to even think over much about, but under the right circumstances one could see a loving - though still dysfunctional - relationship manifesting between siblings. I once played a game called "Kana" where the incest storyline was an intensely emotional issue about not only inappropriate closeness between siblings, but engaging your sister in an experience she'd never have without that. It is considered one of the most intense and emotionally powerful games of its type and you will find virtually no one who has played the game that won't defend the value of it in the story. (predictably, though, people whom have not played the game almost universally fail to understand how it could be done well)

But quite honestly, why not ask for other unappealling, taboo crimes to be available to your character as well? Baby killing, rape, bestiality...they're cool because they're DARK!!!

And that's a good idea on their behalf, as its a recipe to successful games.
I'm also somewhat bothered that a PC cannot, for once, have a relatively normal familial relationship with someone without someone having to look for a way to ruin it.

although it would be interesting, say if Hawke were female, if your sister was a rival regarding another male love interest.
but then, if that were to cause a rift between the sisters, and Bethany goes to the dark side over it......well, that would be kind of cliche.
it would be more interesting......say..........if you liked another male love interest....but through dialogue found out he liked Bethany and she liked him........do you give up on your love interest and let him and your sis be together. Or, do you make a play for the love interest at the risk of alienating your sister.......
that would actually be kind of cool if we are able to make choices like that........

Since I have seen requests of mods for "romancable Loghain" I don't think this is a rule that applies only for "every character who has breasts"

That people behave by the norms of our society is...odd. It wasn't that way in real life, and it shouldn't be that wya in the game.
Of course, they won't actually allow incest, and they probably shouldn't because then we'd have some idiotic investigation by Congress into video games, but for "authenticity", if you will, to the setting then it would not be out of place.

Bestiality - not something I'd be interested in seeing in a game, and I think the potential for getting positive rp value out of it is almost nonexistent. Rape - seriously? Yes, in a dark setting I can certainly see this coming into play ... though do to issues of sexual violence I don't see it ever being implemented as something the pc might engage in. If it were - I'd again congratulate Bioware for taking a chance. Baby killing? Well, you can kill a little kid in DA:O, and under the right - very morally demanding - circumstances I can see this as full of potential; the old "would you kill a baby who you believed would become the next Hitler?" scenario.

Imoen. Romance. Mod.
By the way, this one is considered to be one of the best if not the best BG2 NPC mod ever made. Just saying. It was pretty obvious that people were going to request this.
For the sake of western roleplaying games, I am glad it is already clear that it won't be implemented, although we can be sure that there will be fanfiction and modding about it (at least if Bethany survives the first 10 minutes of the game, which I hope she does).
