Problem: To nVidia's shame, every recent driver version comes with the strange and totally gamebreaking graphics bug described in the topic's title.

Solution: If you're not running one of the newest Fermi cards, roll back your driver to version 196.21 (last working version) or below. If you can't find this one on nVidia's website anymore or you use a laptop, the drivers are available at laptopvideo2go - please follow their instructions on installing drivers and the .INF files (it first sounds complicated but is fairly easy). Easiest way to find the right driver is to browse the forums section.

Also, apparently the very latest 258.96 (32-bit) WHQL release candidate drivers seem to work fine, according to Selene Moonsong at the old forums. No reports on the 64-bit version yet, but surely worth a try.

Since it's no longer necessary to accept eye strain to read this forum (awful colors at Legacy site), I was looking at things in this thread.  I recall when NWN2 was still new, there were a slew of low end Geforces, especially IGPs, turning the clouds in the skies into checkerboard patterns unless the game was played in a Window.

I wonder if members of that fringe area still wander in?

I'm using Win 7 64 bit and just got SoZ. Didn't pay attantion to the sky but the ship you start on has no textures whatsoever. I tried the 64 bit version of the 258.96 drivers but it didn't help. Having a new system with a GeForce GTX 480 I don't concider a pre-197 driver an option. So is there any other way around this?

Also, it seems to affect only SoZ. I can start up the OC, MotB and a custom module just fine without graphical issues. Is that normal for the bug? Can I at least play the OC and MotB without problems or will the graphic glitch somewhere in the middle of the campaign?

Sorry for the stupid questions but as I said I just got a new system and SoZ. Never encountered this bug on my old PC when I had only NWN2 and MotB installed.

Ok, the latest beta driver from nvidia seems to work. It's version 258.96. Just search for it on their website. At the moment you can't find the Vista 64 and Win 7 64 version with the search function but it can be downloaded here.

Hope that helps.

I can confirm that the 64-bit drivers fixed the problem for me. ^_^

Installed 258.96 (win 7 64 bit)... running in compatibility mode for windows xp service pack 2, admin option turned on, visual and desktop themes disabled... verified directx 9.0c is up to date... start up new main module campaign... loads fine in the house... get the furs, etc... walk outside... starts to load... and *crash* to desktop... this is consistent!! How do I play this game?? Running a Geforce 240 GT (512 Mb of DDR 5) on a quad core Phenom 2... with like 4 gigs of system RAM...

Do the latest drivers fix these problems wtih Windows XP SP3 and a GTX470?

I see many are using Windows 7 and confirming it works, but neither on here nor the nvidia forums themselves have proven this fix works for XP. Im thinking of going nvidia but dont wish to change my OS just yet so its more a pre-caution on my part.

i can confirm that the driver does fix the errors in Windows XP SP3

im running windows xp with SP3

and a nvidia 9800gt 512mb

a dual core amd possessor (black edition OC to 3.0gb)

and 2 gigs or ram.

after hearing that the SecuROM had been deactivated in the latest patch. i reinstalled it for the first time in 2 years(my computer has undergone a huge overhual since then)

and as i started playing it last night i ran into the error with the invisible terrain so since i was too

sleepy last night to fix it i went to sleep and forgot about it, i wake up today and play some and

the error(witch i forgot about last night) showed up again, so i googled it and ended up here

after seeing that it may have been my driver i downloaded the 258.96 driver and everything works

perfect now.

im real lazy when it comes to updating my drivers. heck i was still using drivers from last summer.

i hope this helps those XP users.

There are three separate softwares involved in bringing the graphics to the display: the video driver is the initial part, after which comes Direct3D in the form of Dx9, and last, there is the game.  Between 19x.xx (not sure where it started) and 258, the Geforce drivers were not compatible with NWN2.

If you have 258 installed now, and the game isn't able to generate a display, you may need a fresh install of Dx9, and if there's still a problem, uninstall and reinstall the game itself.

I do not know if it's a bug or something related to nvidia driver.

I'll try to write a msg on nividia forum.

Although you are replacing one Geforce driver with another, it is entirely possible, given nVIDIA's gross ineptitude about maintaining quality control on their drivers, for leftover shards of the old drivers to cause problems. There are several utilities available similar to "Driver Clean" that are intended to make such changes more fault-free. You may need to use such a tool.

258.96 is still the latest video driver from NVIDIA, discounting any beta versions they may be working on. However, Gullome, I suspect your 9400 may be a part of the problem. The 9400 is a low-end card roughly the same as about a 6600, I believe.

The minimum requirements for SoZ are higher for SoZ and require the following minimums: ATI Radeon X700 or NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or higher.

Given the typically moronic Atari exaggerations, the two low end 6800s are / were useless even before adding Storm of Zehir (SE and XT versions, neither of which is as good as a 6600 GT).  Looking at the pair side by side (6800 GS and 9400 GT), the 9400 trails at only 40% of the memory bandwidth ( bandwidth is a fairly important aspect), and 86% of another of the measurements the two share, but it actually exceeds the performance of the 6800 GS by 7% on a third criteria: .

http://www.gpureview...1=578&card2=354

FYI (I suppose Selene knows this), the 9400 GT is the same borderline zone card it was the year before, when its name was "8500 GT".  Neither fish nor fowl three years ago, it was not in the Mainline Gaming class, but was up at the top of its own Business Graphics range.  Given that NWN2, the OC, is now four years old, it beat the minimum when it came out a year after the game, but not by much.

From my experience with NWN 2, memory bandwidth is probably the most important aspect. I went from a 7300LE (OEM on my HP Computer) that could run the game to some degree, but suffered massively in performance. The 7300 was removed from the original expected cards that would be supported.

I replaced that with a 7600GT, which was a massive improvement at the time, but couldn't handle the constant stress of the game, greating graphics anomolies.

I then went to an 8800GT, but after a couple of years, I grew frustrated with it as it was one of those where the fan speed controller didn't work and stayed at 30% no matter how hot it would get and had to manually increase the fan speed to compemsate for the lack of automatic controls.

I got a decent deal on a 9800GT+ a little less than a year ago, and I have been happy with that one since then.

My computer will be 5 years old next Spring (Northern Hemisphere) and time for a co,plete replacement as my maine computer, and I will then permanently retire my old RAMBUS system, which is about 9 years old now, though it still runs fairly well and is still serviceable as an office machine.

I noticed your comment about "removed from the list" regarding the 7300, and looked, but couldn't find that Atari / Bioware ever claimed they would in fact support that card.  When they named their minimum Geforce, that had already eliminated nVIDIA's 7300, although I found some foolishness within their Readme discussion of no official support for laptop video.

I am sure that Kiwi never ranked the 7300 anywhere but well below the line.  The readme also listed some unusable desktop cards that the named minimum had eliminated, as follows:

The following video cards support Vertex Shader 2.0 & Pixel Shader 2.0:

ATI Radeon 9500 Pro, ATI Radeon 9600 Pro/XT, ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro/XT, ATI Radeon X700, ATI Radeon X800 XL/XT, ATI Radeon 850 XT,

The following video cards support Vertex Shader 3.0 & Pixel Shader 3.0:

ATI Radeon X1300, ATI Radeon X1800 XL/XT, Nvidia GeForce 6600, Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT, Nvidia GeForce 6800, Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT/GTO/Ultra, Nvidia GeForce 7800 GT/GTX

(Too slow to consisder: ATI Radeon X300, ATI Radeon X600 Pro, Nvidia GeForce FX 5200, Nvidia GeForce FX 5500, Nvidia GeForce FX 5600, Nvidia GeForce FX 5700, Nvidia GeForce FX 5800, Nvidia GeForce FX 5900, S3 DeltaChrome S8, S3 DeltaChrome S18 CE/Pro/Nitro, XGI Volari V5, XGI Volari V8

Nvidia GeForce 6200, Nvidia GeForce 6200 TC,)

The laptop cards they claimed to have tested (which I see included several that are too slow to consider, as per my asterisks):

"However, all of this aside, here are some laptop/notebook video chipsets that should work with titles requiring a 128MB Hardware T&L video card or higher:

** ATI Mobility Radeon 9600
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
ATI Mobility Radeon 9800

** ATI Mobility Radeon x600
ATI Mobility Radeon x700
ATI Mobility Radeon x800

ATI Mobility Radeon x1400
ATI Mobility Radeon x1600
ATI Mobility Radeon x1800

** Nvidia GeForce Go 6400
Nvidia GeForce Go 6600
Nvidia GeForce Go 6800
Nvidia GeForce Go 6800 Ultra
** Nvidia GeForce Go 7300
** Nvidia GeForce Go 7400
Nvidia GeForce Go 7600
Nvidia GeForce Go 7800
Nvidia GeForce Go 7800 GTX
Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GS
Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GTX"

P. S.  I believe that I recall some severely anomalous behavior being credited to all of the Geforce 6200 related nVIDIA products, including the 6100, 6150, and 7150 IGPs.  That would be the 7100, 7200, the two lowest of the 7300s, for desktop cards, and the Go 7400, which all were supposed to have severe problems with the game's representation of cloudy skies being rendered instead as a checkerboard or plaid type effect.

There was a pre-release list that floated around the old BioBoards Pre-release forums for NWN 2 prior to any official release from Atari and Obsidian that included the 7300 but was based on the early minimum requirements, where the 7300 did meet those early requirements, and the 7300 did work reasonably well during the beta's I participated in. During the beta, is when the official list actually came together, As I recall, the 7300 did meet the Vertex Shader 2.0 & Pixel Shader 2.0 requirement and met the RAM requirements, which were all that were given early on, prior to the release of the more official list of cards were released.

I don't recall seeing anyone from the Beta showing up complaining about the difference after the game release.  They may have had their own private forum, though.  The legacy forum software was getting severely out of date, but did offer a lot of options that this site does not.  I had a very similar awakening about video hardware earlier in 2006, to that referenced by Kiwi as leading to a serious study of video graphics cards.

I also had several Geforce FXes I couldn't get good use from.

Actually, there were private Beta Forums, and video cards have been extensively discussed in those as well as in the post release forums on the BioBoards.

The 7300 worked, but not without compromise, such as using lowered seting configurations, and tricks such as playing the game in a window, rather than full screen. One could not expect NWN 2 to run on a 7300 at a resolution greater than 1024*768, and resolution was something that was pretty much ignored by the Kiwi as I recall, although at the time, the standard 17" and 19" CRT and LCD monitors were the most common, unlike the wide-screen monitors that are rather common today with resolutions of 1680*1050 and higher; resolution matters.
