We've had ourselves a heat wave over here. It's cloudy, but it's humid. I am not looking forward to the weekend, because it's only going to get hotter.
Some like it HOT!

It's been around +30 C (That's 86 F for you wierd American people), in Helsinki for a while now, and the abominable heat is forecast to continue at least the next few weeks or so.
Dammit, I'm a Finn - I live on the same latitude as southern Alaska. It's not supposed to be this hot here. -30 C we can handle, but not a gazillion degrees ABOVE zero.
To make it worse, I have a south-facing appartment, with a large window that guarantees that I'm in the crosshairs of the sun from morning till night. And being so north, the sun comes up around 4:30 a.m, and goes down almost 10.30 p.m.
I could close the roll down curtain that I have, but that doesn't improve things much, as it's DEEP RED in color, absorbing heat with great efficiency. It's about a billion degrees (in any system) in my appartment.
And of course I don't own a fan. Apparently most people in Helsinki don't either, because all the fans EVERYWHERE have been sold out. After the word got out that a store downtown was to receive a shipment of fans, yesterday morning the new shipment sold out in two minutes, in a mad rush to the store. We're not supposed to NEED fans in Finland!
Woke up 2:30 a.m. last night, sweating like a pig, and had to take a cold shower to have a chance of catching some more sleep.
Just had to rant. Isn't much else I can do about it.
As a person who just returned from St Petersburg I share your pain
It's Nothern Europe, it supposed to be cold here, darn it !

Alas, the skies have cleared once again, and the sun is shining, so this modest reprieve isn't likely to last. <_<

Though today's not been quite as bad as yesterday. Still, the news say that there's no end to the heat wave in sight.
Went looking for a fan in a couple of stores today, and they've all got the same story - no fans. Even all the importers have run out. If someone had foreseen this, and pre-ordered about a gazillion fans, they'd be making money hand over fist right now.
Had my hear cut really short - almost bald - today; helped a little. I'm not shaving my beard though. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/tongue.png[/smilie]

Bah, I'm Australian, 30 C isn't that unusual. It gets up around 40 C in the summer, 45 C if it's bad. It's winter now though so...yeah
Yes, but I bet you own a fan or two. <_<
And don't live in an appartment optimized for retaining heat in sub-zero temperatures.
Getting 30 C here is a bit like getting -30 C in more southern lattitudes would be. With central heating everywhere and a culture prepared to take on tough winters, Finns wouldn't blink an eye, but I bet Australians might find that a bit troublesome.
Still, this isn't the hottest climate I've experienced - spent some 6 weeks in Toronto with family friends there when I was 12 years old, and an really exceptional heatwave was taking place there then. At worst, it got up to 45 C
But I was surrounded by fans then....
You can manually fan yourself using a cardboard and flapping it up and down, (but ofcourse you probably had thought of that.)<< if worse comes to worse but you won't be able to sleep like that, and if the heat wave will linger on maybe its worth it to cover your huge window in the ceiling temporarily somehow, being hydrated is top priority in times of heat wave.

well I think its true though, or atleast it will be safer for us to assume its true, heat waves are being more common nowadays in my opinion, even in my country, weather has been whacko this past few years,
We need to be on the safe side and assume global warming is indeed real .and we need to get an opinion from someone who has been around longer than us to tell us if the weather indeed is changing. any volunteers (heheh)??
