Basically it opens up new AI slots so when you're not playing as a character they will automatically know (for example) "if health is less than 30% cast heal" or "When enemy is in melee range switch to melee".

I checked the Greywardens site, and though it gives what looks like the skill's in-game description, that is of no use in knowing what it actually does :P "The character can formulate strategies quickly in battle, and consequently gains a combat tactics slot."

Is there a list anywhere of these AI slots that the Tactics skill opens up? Also, whose AI is affected... just the party member that has the skill, or the whole party? Or the party but only if the member with the skill is leader?

Combat tactics will be available to every character in your party. It will only have an impact on the character who takes the skill. Each rank gives the character more AI slots (more on this later).
As your character levels you will automatically open additional AI slots, but if you want more you will need to up tactics. These AI slots are individual scripts that your character will follow.

One example would be to give Wynn a script to cast heal when any party members health is below 50%. Another could be for her to drink a mana potion when her mana is below 10%.The scripts are only active when you are not controlling the character (if you control Wynn she will no longer heal without you making her).

My understanding is that there is also the option to just assign party members  "personalities" so you could set Wynn to healer and ignore doing any of the scripts, in which case you wouldn't want to pick up this skill. She might then heal when she thought it appropriate and otherwise just use her staff, but you wouldn't have any control over when she thought healing was appropriate.

If you plan on pausing the game all the time and selecting each party members ability manualy then this skill will provide 0 benefit for you. If you want to just run 1 character, and plan out your allys moves ahead of time this could make life much easier. If you plan on using 1 character primarily and only occasionally switching that main character probably should avoid this skill.

Hope this helps :)

sadly this does seem to be the case. With the recent feed back of how rare skill points are, something like getting 3 by the time you are level 10, it seems this will quickly be overlooked.

A warrior or mage would have 6 skill points by level 10, while a rogue would have 11.

Is this confirmed? According to Paynejb at the wardens tournament their warrior had earned only 3 skill points by level 10.

Now you mention it, we had gained three new skills. Being at level 10, I'm going to speculate that it's every 4 levels. so 1, 5, 9 etc.

Could be wrong, though.

By that account jr, that means by level 25 (Which is apparently the level cap according to some) You'd only have 6 points. That's ****ing awful. Talk about no return for your work. It really seems as though leveling has little to no effect. Whereas in BG2 and NWN when you leveled up from level 2 - 3 you would be considerably stronger, it seems like a level 25 in this would be comparable to a level 9 or 10 in those games. That's kind of awful.

It seems my epic level 25 warrior will be just a fraction less fragile than when he was level 1. *Puke*

Remember that is skills not talents. While your hero may not be as good at coercion or making traps they will still have a fairly vast repertoire of abilities or spells as those do occur every level. I think the biggest ramification of this change would be that we have to specialize each persons skills e.g., one char a trapper, one in coercion, one a herbalist
