Don't talk to Ash/Kaidan or Liara. Works like a charm

1. Don't talk to Ashley (if male), Kaidan (if female), or Liara (both genders) at all. Sure you miss out on conversation, codex entries, and some xp, but it works.
2. Kaidan (if female) will eventually admit he's getting "mixed signals" about the two of you, and will ask if he's out of line. Tell him he is. Don't worry, Shep lets him down easy.
3. Liara will at some point talk about a "mutual attraction" between her and Shepard. Tell her she's wrong.
4. Ashley is annoying because just talking to her between missions starts a relationship. Supposedly if you choose the "You're out of line!" dialogue option (it's on the left side of the wheel) when it comes up, you can avoid a romance, but I haven't personally confirmed this.
5. If all else fails, if you are in a relationship with Ashley or Kaidan, leaving them behind on Virmire will take care of that.

If you are stuck in a romance enroute to Ilos be the biggest jackass you can, I think I read that will work.
Oh, and if you are romancing Ashley and you let her live you can ask her "How far are you going to go to redeem your family?" She will say somwething like "That isn't fair." Thus ending it I believe. Easiest way is to Virmire the unwanted love interest.

I've always found it odd that people report it's so easy to end up in a romance with Ashley. It hasn't happened once to me during numerous mShep play throughs, and during one of them I specifically set out to try to romance her. I think I must have said something wrong during that first encounter on the Citadel when she talks about mini skirts or something.
Anyway, it's certainly no Jacob moment.

A note: As far as I know it is virtually impossible to avoid a romance with Ashley if you talk to her regularly and even go neutral. Once I accidentally started one and found that there was literally nothing I could do to break it off.
If this happens you can break it off by only selecting to renegade options when she comes to talk to you at the lockers after the Normandy was locked down, just don't talk to her again after she walks away in disgust and the romance will be ended, but I assume you can re-start if by going to talk to her again.

I had to work my ass off to even get Ashley romanced (third playthrough), and yet I still got alot of things out the conversations.

Yes, thank you for this post. It's a habit of mine to talk to all the npcs in between missions but I started getting warning signs when there doesn't seem to be any "disinterested" options on the dialogue wheel when talking to Ashley. The ease of falling into a romance trap with her is ridiculously. Even now I have no idea if we're in a relationship or not. Best to kill her off just to make sure.

Strange, even though that I followed the non-romance path, I still have Liara romancing my character, even though I turned her down back then... Ah well, I came this far after finishing all these missions so I just leave it that then.
