Using motion controllers for gaming (real gaming, not Wii sports and the like) is one of the more brain damaged ideas to come out of the corporate world in recent memory. The whole purpose of a controller is to translate a player's thought to in-game action as quickly and seamlessly as possible. Making a person flail his arms about like a retard instead of simply pressing a button runs completely counter to that purpose. But the Wii did it, and the Wii sold well, so now everyone has to do it. Bulletproof corporate logic.

You half to remember, Kinect isn't even out yet, could have some glitch to prevent accurate play, and it's relatively new tech for the 360. It could take years before it's capable to play RPGs games like ME.

That last bit is what makes me question the whole Kinect notion (and the PS3 Move as well, though it may benefit from being much more "Wii-esque").  Peripherals/hardware add-ons like these tend to have little success, and especially so when they're released late in a console's life.  The 360 is five years old already, and it's been purely a traditional controller system that whole time.  This isn't like the Wii, where right off the bat you knew you'd be getting a rather different style of controller.

I know MS thinks it'll go another 5 years, but guess what? That means it's basically all downhill from here.  They've set a limit on its lifespan. If the Kinect takes a couple years to truly get going, no one is going to care.  On the bright side, it'd at least be a useful experience to draw on when they decide to finalize the design for the 720 (or whatever they end up calling it).  The 360 certainly won't sink if the Kinect doesn't live up to their expectations, and they can correct their mistakes and properly integrate it into the next generation system, along with any improvments that  may not be currently feasible on the 360 hardware.  And of course, developers will gain experience in implementing novel control schemes as well, even if the games end up losing money.

The Kinect technology seems very Wii-like to me, and I have no interest in Wii. I imagine games that utilize this technology won't be on my must-buy list.

what do you think about that? one word. CRAP.... kinect can't handle complicated battle game yet. it needs more time to stabilize. well, I don't like console game anyway. if you think about simple games which mostly implanted into wii, yeah, you can play. but you can't play for WOW, starcraft, bad company 2, halo reach, left 4 dead 2, and so on. the point is that you'd better forget about it if you think just like me.

No. Kinect.

The fact that Peter Molyneux endorses the Kinect should hint you about the true feasibility of it.

Strikes me as a bad idea. Either you'd have to integrate it fully, i.e. spend most of the development time trying to make it work seamlessly for action sequences, or it will just be a gimmick thing that you use a couple times in the game but have to pay significant amount of money for. I wouldn't feel more immersed in a conversation just because I had to use some motion gestures.

If it does happen it would obviously be done to rake in more
money, Bioware already know that die-hard fans will buy it and more people will go ahead and get it because they want another game for their wagglebox.

I think a lot of people here are peeing themselves with paranoia for no good reason. It's pretty obvious the game is not going to REQUIRE you to have Kinect, as much as ME 1 or 2 requires you to have Kinect. Microsoft are doing the same thing with Forza 4. They aren't replacing a traditional gameplay mechanic, they're simply adding more depth to what's there. whether or not it works remains to be seen.

Bottom line is this; it's an option. If you have Kinect, fine, if not, no loss. So chill out.

Sweet! If Bioware really does make a game with this technology and EA doesn't somehow ruin it, I'll follow it till release.

You people oversimplify the technology, drastically. It is not just a motion sensing technology like the Wii and Move. Even though those are its main "competitors" it is significantly more than that.

It combines a state of the art voice recognition technology with an infrared depth-sensing camera and a 480p RGB camera.

A truly innovative developer like Bioware or Valve could really do something special with this technology beyond the standard fare.

How special? well if the PC based kinect hacks are any indication, pretty damn special. People working on their home computers in their spare time have quite literally created virtual reality games with it and a few extras.

Anyone who doesn't see the potential of Kinect hasn't been impartial enough to do their homework on it.

If there's an option, it could be a nice one to have. Shooter controls on consoles always did have a disadvantage to mouse-and-keyboard, and motion control can POTENTIALLY be an answer to that.

The problem is in execution and the limitations of the control method itself. The Wii, for example, has far too few buttons to compliment its motion controls, and even with Wii Motion Plus, there's usually some glaring control issue that takes away from whatever a game manages to gain from the motion or pointer control. If they manage a good Kinect or PlayStation Move control scheme, more power to them, but the fact of the matter is, they may wind up losing more than they'd gain. Fortunately, this is unlikely to do more than provide an alternative control option that people try, hate, and then never touch again--a total non-issue, in other words.

EDIT: Oh, you. This is a necro'd thread. Why the hell did you make me waste time writing a serious answer? Ggh...
