I actually did not realize that Hawke was running around with Asala until I saw the GameInformer screenshots. I suspect it is simply a case of the real weapon not being in the game yet. But my imagination likes to make it go like this:
First Biowarian: We need something awesome for the player to use as a weapon while we're working on final weapon art. What have we got that's awesome?
Second Biowarian: Sten!
First Biowarian: So I checked, and apparently it's not possible for the player to weild Sten as a weapon. What's the next best thing?

Eh it always bothered me that Vigilance was canonically considered the Warden's "iconic" wepon if you had it crafted. I know Starfang was DLC but still. . .
The legend of the only person in history to kill an Archdemon and survive the experience doesn't sound as good with "and he had a sword made of ELDEST Dragonbone" as it does with "And his blade was made from the stars themselves and glittered with the light of the aether"
