I also liked the original darkspawn, especially the disciples from Awakening rather than these new disciples.

Graphic updating & polishing is usually one of the last things that are done during a game in development and considering this game is still 8 months away. Which means that it could still possibly be in the Pre-Alpha stage. So there shouldn't be anything to worry about...

Those aren't ordinary darkspawn, they're disciples (go play Awakening, or at least watch a few videos before you complain more). If there are normal darkspawn, they wont look like that.

Actually, the GI article pretty much makes it sound they've decided to retroactively change the "regular" darkspawn and that's what it's supposed to look like "now". The disciple look probably influenced this new design in some ways, though.

No worrys mate, there Alpha shots.
So they don't have the final skin :D

If...if thats what they REALLY look like though....Then it looks like Skeletor is hiring again.

That makes no sense. Their models and skins have clearly been entirely changed, and they don't look particularly low res. Look at the Game Informer article.

I'm not sure I like the difference in their appearance, but I guess it's not too important. Hopefully they won't be the main enemy type anyway.

If you look at their faces, it makes them look like skulls....So its a joke...
Im getting it wither way for the story and gameplay lol. I just hope they put a second skin on them with more details, like in DA:O

I do not like the skin tone of them right now. However, the facial structure looks great you can see the wrinkles and how their jaws look slack make them look more gruesome.

If you don't like the look you should worry coz the designs won't change much if at all.

Honestly, I'm glad that the look is going to be different. I disagree completely with the OP - how did the darkspawn (God, what a stupid name) not look like orcs straight from Tolkien? If anything, despite the funny-looking armor, the ogre looks much more human and "corrupted" than the darkspawn in Origins ever did.

Yeah, the ninja hoods look kinda silly, but if they fix it up to make them appear more like Disciples, that will be the right move. Just please... no orcs. I see them in every game, I can't seem to get rid of the bastards. Hell, I can't even avoid them in Fallout 3 now.

I'm not saying that I don't like the way the model themselves look, I'm saying that if people are worried about how the game looks like it belongs to a PS2 console to not to worry since graphics are usually some of the last things that are updated and polished (since it is the easiest to fix)

PS2

Google PS2 screenshots, compare, see that it already looks technically much much better than what that console was capable of.

Anyway, this says they're hurlocks, almost certainly NOT awakened. It's the new darkspawn design and I doubt it'll change. And they look less like orcs or other generic fantasy monsters now. Although they're still fairly stereotypical, I can't really say they look like copypasta monsters from game or book X.
The spikey armor may not look great, but it's more sensible in the setting for the hurlocks to wear pieces of crude metal plates strapped together than the elaborate fantasy armors they wore in DAO.

Ah thanks for that, I've only played through Awakening once. So Disciples have paler skin than their normal counterparts.

Admittedly I haven't read the Lord of the Rings novels, the only Tolkien novel I've read is The Hobbit. However I've seen the Jackson films, and I did not get an Orc vibe from the aesthetics of the darkspawn. The Hurlocks looked more like zombies than Jackson Orcs in my opinion. I did however get an Orc vibe from the presentation of the darkspawn. In some cinematic sequences featuring the darkspawn it felt like BioWare was blatantly plagiarizing Jackson's films.

The darkspawn in the screenshot posted by the OP look like Dark Elves from one of those Warhammer settings. I prefer the original zombie look myself.

After seeing the screenshots of DA2 in Game Informer, i have noticed that the monsters they are battling look like cavemen with chain coifs on their heads and very spikey armor (and no lips). The caption below the picture mentions that these are suppossed to be darkspawn. If this is the case i am very dissapointed, these new darkspawn look more like orcs or goblins from other fantasy settings, rather than the awesome tainted reflections of men, dwarves, elves, and qunari from DA:O. I know that this is early in DA2's production, but i realy hope that this is not the final reflection of what darkspawn will look like in DA2. Any thoughts or disagreements?

I agree completely. I happened to like the graphics style of DA:O and I don't understand why they need to change it. Theres a very good saying that goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" Sure they can improve the detail, but to completely redesign them when there was noting wrong makes no sense. And to those who say they look like orcs from lord of the rings, I disagree. Darkspawn have their own unique look. Hurlocks look like corrupted, rotting corpses of men, genlocks look like evil demon midgets with pointy-toothed grins that stretch from ear to ear and orgres look like, well like nothing from LotR (and I do like them, just not sure what to compare them too).

I do realize that there was a large discrepancy between the PC version of DA:O and the console version (I played on the PC) but they could have just had a separate team to work on the graphics for the console version and leave the PC version alone (aside from the odd tweak here and there)

Well thats just my opinion on things, feel free to speak up if you agree or disagree.

not only did disciples look much more badass in awakening than in DA2, but the tiny bits of armor of the darkspawn in da2 look totally dumb and useless and being taken from a S&M party
