I didn't get a chance to ask for this one early enough in DAO's development because until ME came out I had no reason to believe there would be depth-of-field effects.

But there were, and I really don't like them.  I find them distracting.  If I'm playing a character, my character might be paying attention to something in the background in a scene rather than the speaker (for example), but then if the "cinematic presentation" decides to pull a rack focus, I'm left staring at a blurry image.

There's no reason for shallow focus.  The golden age of cinema often had very deep focus, or at least appeared to (many of those in-focus backgrounds were just very detailed painted backdrops), so a cinematic presentation need not employ depth-of-field effects.  Also, I understand those effects are an extra layer of processing in rendered scenes.  We might see performace gains from disabling them.

BioWare's previous "cinematic" games, ME and ME2, both featured film grain, and both allowed that to be disabled.  And both featured depth-of-field effects, but neither allowed that to be disabled.  DAO, which wasn't marketed as primarily cinematic, also employed mandatory depth-of-field effects.  I ask that DA2 break that trend.

Please let us disable depth-of-field effects.  They serve only to force our attention to a particular part of a scene, and that is a barrier to deep roleplaying.

Thanks for listening.

I find the depth of field distracting in DA:O around character's hair in conversations. There are little blocks of in focus background around the hair that make me wonder whether its the game having depth of field, or I have a smudge on my glasses. An on/off toggle would be nice.

I agree with you. It does get distracting. Plus, it seems like it would be an easy thing to switch on and off.

There was a time when it didn't bother me. That time, however, was before I'd really played many games that featured it.

So yes, give us the ability to turn it off. It's incredibly annoying having something in the background catch your eye, yet you can't really get a good look at it because it's blurry due to depth of field effects.

It's really distracting at times.

I sometimes find myself watching the edges of the effect rather than the characters face/body.

I agree, though I recall playing DAO with DoF disabled just fine. In the few games I have with this feature, I always end up disabling it after giving it a fresh go. Thanks Devs, but my eyes focus just fine all by themselves. :)

DA & ME had DOF? I never noticed it at all. Weird, I always notice it in movies and tv shows and I hate it.

On a side note I noticed my question only has one word spelled out, a new record.

I didn't have a problem with them but I fully support having an option to turn them off for those who did.
