Posted ImagePosted ImageIn the GameInformer Article it talks about how the spells are now customizable.  How does everybody think this'll work?  I realize we don't know anything about it yet, but speculation is fun so I thought, why not?

To me, it almost sounds like some kind of Dragon Age variant of metamagic. For those of you unfamiliar with D&D, metamagic is basically a system where you can make spells go farther, last longer, empower them, or REALLY empower them. Archmages could further effect their spells, making a fireball do cold damage for example, or changing the shape of a spell. I would assume that, if it's along these lines, then we would simply alter the mana cost of spells but this could be waaaay off from how it'll actually be.

What does everybody think?

well that metamagic thing sounds reasonable. perhaps also more specs, for example one like "firemage"?

I like this! It makes mages seem more powerful. Instead of just using basic Mage Co. approved spells it seems more like the mage is manipulating them. It's a level of flexibility not in most RPG's.

Well when you look at the spells in DA:O, the some higher tier spells weren't really that much better than lower tier spells. That and they said there will be less spells.

My guess is you will still invest points in the different schools of magic, which will be used to unlock new 'base' spells or augment one of your existing spells in that school -- like adding a knockback effect or targeting multiple enemies instead of one.

I'm excited and I can't wait to hear more details.  I don't mind less spells as long as the ones there are super interesting and useful.

I'll probably customize the Fireball to have an even bigger explosion. Also, have all the undead I raise sing and dance to the Pumpkin King song from the beginning of Nightmare Before Christmas. They won't be able to fight anymore, but I'll be entertained.

I guess my biggest concern is, what are they cutting? I understand the concept of quality over quantity, but at the same time I don't want to be left with a radically lower number of spells. Of course, this wouldn't matter so much if we can manipulate our spells to a large degree, but we don't know how much we can customize them yet. I wish we had a rough estimate in terms of numbers, but we probably won't get anything like that for a while.

They aren't.  Or at least, I saw nothing that really suggested they're cutting spells.  There was a part where it seemed like they were saying that you could choose one spell and a handful of customizations, rather than choosing multiple spells, but I had read that as a "you can choose to be deep or broad", not "we're cutting spells in favor of customizing".

Posted ImagePosted ImageI get the impression that spells are being cut, but you could be right. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind cutting out old spells if they're putting in new ones. I'm afraid we'll lose the ability to customize our mages in a variety of ways (well, not really. I'm afraid we won't have as MANY options).  You always have to trim the fat, though, and I agree that there were spells that I never touched and there were many unnecessary repetitions (two hexes that did the same thing except for one was AoE, three different spells that enchanted weapons, two walking bomb spells, and a weakness effect that goes from one target to a radiation from you).  Ultimately, I have faith in Bioware and I'm not THAT worried. Just a little.

I would rather see a system for the Spell/Talent trees where you can put more than one point into each, increasing its power and perhaps changing/adding secondary effects after certain intervals.

It would add much more variety to character builds, especially when optimization is concerned.

Posted ImagePosted ImageThat would be quite interesting.  That sort off reminds me of the leveling up in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, except that I don't think it worked too well in that game because you had to put several points in a skill for it to change.  Still, it's an interesting idea.

I agree with that completely, having less sheer numbers and making the ones that we do have cooler and/or more powerful. I'd much rather put points into existing ones to make them better/more powerful, than just constantly picking new ones. Of course I also want new ones too, so cut out a bunch, give us some new ones, and let us power them up!

Well.. the metamagic of D&D was because the spell have a max amount of damage they can do... (usually a maxcaster lvl before they get caped) but on DA we don't have that (Except 2,3 spells with fixed effects) almost all the spells take the spellpower as factor, so the most weak spell will alway get better and better and better as the caster get more spellpower...

Maybe they could give special talents which could change the way some spells work , making Singe-target, Cone-Area, Radius Area a option to choice, but who knows, could be all and even more, or maybe nothing

That actually would be pretty funny if they let you do that. Having a bunch of singing and dancing corpses.

I'm just glad they aren't switching to Fable 2's magic system, that would be maddening.
