It was stated that on the 360 to import a save file from ME to ME2 it had to be on the original harddrive.

I just recently traded in my Elite for the new Elite S. I transferred everything off of my 120 gb hdd to an external hdd then to the internal 250 hdd.

I was curious to see what would happen if I attempted to import my ME save game, well low and behold it let me import the ME save game into ME2.

Did one of the mandatory updates make this possible or were they mistaken about it having to be on the original hdd?

They weren't mistaken at the time, however MS may have upgraded the transfer feature to include files that were previously hidden and untransferable.
