I agree with you completely. That said, I do enjoy the romances and prefer that they remain a part of BioWare's RPGs.

I don't want to bet, and honestly this is the silliest discussion I've seen. It's a game, it's not real.
Good thing no one said they thought it was real, right?
They didn't say it, but they sure are acting like it now aren't they. Any other smarta** comments you'd like to make?

Not right now, but I've got more up my sleeve, and they're guaranteed to be more original than "a video game isn't really real."

You can have good and proper character development and interactions without romances. I managed in BG2 just fine. Hell, I've done 3 full playthroughs throughout the years without even knowing I could boink Jaheria or Aerie.
Yeah, I can enjoy games without romance plots too. It is not integral to the game at all in my opinion.
However I feel that if they do decide to have romance in the game, there should be romance for everyone.
Besides Dragon Age is already proven itself a very diverse universe both the game itself and from the novels.
There are many gay, lesbian or bisexual characters: Leliana, Zevran, Wade, Herren, Branka, Marjolaine, Nicolas, Julien, Darrien and Iona, and possibly the Warden him/herself. And maybe more who we just didn't know about because it wasn't important.
I see no reason for that trend not to continue, and with so many LGB characters around already, it's entirely realistic a bi/gay man and a bi/gay woman can be among Hawke's companions or aquantiences.

This will be my last response as really I don't want to get into it on a forum, it's pretty pointless and about as exciting as watching to turtles go at it.
So truce and moving on.
Still think it's a silly discussion though

I would love for romance to be involved, if only for the sake of drama that it could cause. A ten year span is a long time. A lot of things could happen; one of them may be stopping by Kirkwall's equivalent of the Pearl, or Hawke learning to count on someone as much as they count on him/her. One of the things that isn't likely to happen? Hawke remaining absolutely chaste through that whole time period, which may happen for any player who would want to roll their character gay.
'Course, it's two-thirty in the morning, Vicodin is my best friend right now, and I'm speaking out of my ass.

I would rather see romances/character interaction done well than done for the sake of political correctness or fairness. As you and others have said, romances are not integral to the RPG experience, though the hysteria about them on the forums during, say, the launch of Awakening would lead one to assume otherwise. If it means better character interaction overall for all players, I'd rather see romances completely axed.
Still, I'm sure the DA team will implement same-sex romance in DA2 if they have the time and resources to do it well.

I don't get the "political correctness or fairness" thing. Is that the only perceivable reason to include s/s romances? Couldn't it be included as yet another level of character control?

I think BioWare has proven that when they put in romances of any sort, they are done well. At least, that's my opinion about them.
As you and others have said, romances are not integral to the RPG experience...
I was one of the people who said something along those lines. However, this should not be taken to mean that I think RPGs would be better off without romance. Most fantasy stories like those in RPGs have romance in them--it's part of the genre. I'm not inclined to believe that BW's games would feature richer character interaction if romances were cut.

I agree that this is another option for character development. It can be done well and not just thrown in poorly to "waste resources" for the sake of being PC. It's also a sound business decision.
