Out of curiosity, I wonder what the distribution would look like on a "number of romances played" chart.

Like how many people in various demographics go after what kind of romance or something.

Personally, I'm curious about the various kinds of dialogue available in the game and try to enjoy as much of it as possible.  On my first playthrough, male human noble, my character romanced Leliana, Morrigan, and Zevran.  Despite being a straight guy, I was perfectly happy to try all the romances available to my character because I was really excited about the game and wanted to see as much content as possible.

I came across this in a dev interview, talking specifically about same-sex romances in the game.  So, it should be encouraging??  But the OP seems to think the problem will come from the evil corporate hand stifling the dev team, so maybe not.

We feel really strongly that we want those options available. We want people to feel that there’s something for everyone, there’s someone for everyone, there’s relationships there. It reflects the real world in our minds. So you know… On a personal level, I don’t get frustrated with it anymore. It’s part of the price of doing business, in a sense.

If they have the time and money then BioWare should put it in. However as Gaider said most players won't take advantage of a homosexual relationship so I definitely don't see it as being a top priority.

If in real life I like redheads with French accents, does it mean that all my characters are going to share that trait? Certainly not. It's called roleplaying for a reason. Playing characters with different sexual orientations and different genders is part of the interest of roleplaying. Playing a gay character because you're gay in real life is just unimaginative.

Then I guess we straight players need gay romances so we can be imaginative, too.   Image IPB

Other options are just gay.

I think it would be cool to have an openly gay character. In my experience, someone who is bisexual is not at all like someone who is gay, and being bisexual is not about 'switching' between preferences. Though of course all this is based off an ex-girlfriend of mine, so it may be all wrong. But nevertheless, I think that having the option for a same-sex romance is not the same as having a gay character in a game, and appreciable to see society get to the point where a character who is gay (but not even neccesarily romanceable) is in the game.

I think it would be great to play a gay character, but someone like Gay Perry from Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, played by Val Kimmer. Anyone?

Oh psh.

I realize having an option in a game that you can't or won't access because it doesn't meet your tastes has got to be annoying. I know I for one like to get as deeply immersed as possible, and see as much of a game as I can rather than just blaze through. Having content I could technically access but which doesn't strike me as desirable, but which could have been just right for me with a well-placed addition or two would bother me to no end.

(And let's face it, the same sex romances in DA:O were kind of cop-outs, just throwing in two bisexual characters who'd essentially use the same dialogue for either gender romanced. At that rate, you could simply open any character up to any kind of romance, and if you want to preserve some individuality, make some harder to romance for one gender than for the other.)

But at least you're 'only' homosexual, often not being catered to and occasionally the tail end of stupid jokes or 'zany' characters. I'm German, and each year I get to pass up on literally dozens of games because they contain ****s or some other weird German villain. ****ing yay. Exactly what I care to experience.

Don't really care about gay characters. I killed Zevran every time before he had a chance to push his gay-elf antics on me.

Problem solved.

Just felt the need to isolate that term for posterity.

Well, how about this then: we're very aware of the desires of our fans when it comes to romances, whether they be homosexual or otherwise. Being able to include any kind of content that's really only useable by a relatively small percentage of the player base is often problematic-- it's not an issue of "want to" but rather "able to". There's also the issue of where you put the resources you have-- adding content for extra player options is great, but if they're options that many players will not use or event want to use it's not necessarily the best use of those resources. I can't really fault a decision to provide more options for a greater amount of players as opposed to less options for everyone.

Hang on, let me give this a better response. I don't want to pick you apart too much here since a) you obviously know the industry better than I do; and B) you can't tell us much about DA2 romances at this stage.

But is providing same-sex romance options really including a lot more content? My impression was that this is why Leliana and Zevran had been made bi rather than gay -- so that they were still 'accessible' as romance options to the greater gaming population. That way, you weren't including a great deal of content that only a few people were going to access -- other than a few pronoun changes in dialogue. Secondly, I don't think it's fair to say that only gay players are going to use these options -- like we've seen in this thread, a lot of straight people are going to go "eww eww get the gay away from me" but others are slightly more open-minded, and might be interested for roleplay purposes.

True, I've done two playthroughs where the Warden's have had gay relationships and I'm heterosexual. An open mind should be key to anything a person does, not just video games.

That can be easily fixed, just add an achievement for completing the same sex romance. Everyone will play it then, even homophobes... :innocent:

They only thing that will ****** me off is if we get the same line of BS we were given for ME, about the "pre-defined character" ruling out gay male plotlines--and those plotlines only. The limitations of a pre-defined character cannot reasonably exclude same-sex romance for one gender while permitting it for another.

Make the call based on what you feel your audience will tolerate. But just say that's what you're doing, we're not idiots.

I do think that Bioware has gotten a fair amount of media exposure for the way it's pushed the envelope on this -- first with Liara in ME, and then with Zevran -- so in purely mercenary terms, placating the bigots has to be balanced against piquing the curiosity of novelty-seekers.

Nothing wrong with that -unless of course some people feel threatened in their manhood because of a certain elf who goes both ways...

I've been meaning to watch that but haven't gotten around to it yet. I was thinking along the lines of Handsome Bob from RocknRolla. One of the guys, kinda of a bad*ss but just happens to be gay.
Or maybe someone like Midnighter from The Authority who scares the absolute heck out of people because he's such an astoundingly bad*ss fighting machine...

On a seperate note I can understand the mind-set that "something I have no interest in playing is a waste of space". I've never had any interest in playing a dwarf so I kinda feel like the dwarf origins are a waste of space for me.
Then again I also understand that my opinion isn't everyones and I would never suggest that they cut content just because it doesn't appeal to me personally.

I cant agree more with this. Double standards and then trying to rationalise them is rather insulting.

Fox News: Bioware, the game developer who already came to public attention by developing an alien porn game, now forces players to have gay sex just to complete their achievments in theri new game.

Think of all the free publicity the game would get.

"If you're not gay, you're an underachiever! Is BioWare trying to teach reverse bigotry to our kids?"

I think some are jumping the Assumption Shark too soon with Gaider's comments explaining content and budget considerations. These are the exact same expositions he gave during the DA:O development cycle on the old forums -- and look what kind of LGBT content we did have in Origins, from Leli and Zevran, to the options of straight/gay/trans at the Pearl, Branka and Hespith, Wade and Herren, Marjolaine, Dairren and Iona, seducing the Fort guard, and so on. He is merely explaining his views and what he deems rationale to relate to us, the peanut gallery, since it is not yet time to discuss companions and romances. He is not forecasting doom or giving cryptic messages for people to 'brace themselves' for a let down.

We will just have to wait and see for the time being.

LOL, most of my freinds that played did that as well!

Zevran"what shall the handsome stranger do to me"
Player "DIE DIE DIE"

Myself, I hoped and prayed Bioware would write the character interesting enough that you could get past the gay crap so I kept him alive on my first couple play throughs and explored his conversations but sadly, he never really rises above anoying little efem gay character.
