Just to note: The DA Character Creator as well as The GIMP are both only the cost of your download and learning/play time with them.

Damn! The chicken suit's zipper is stuck. And I know it's a fowl thing to say, but it looks like my goose is cooked, I'm a sitting duck. Well I guess that's what I get for being a turkey.

I think I've uploaded one, but can't seem to find it in my list of options when I go to choose a new picture.

Provided you follow exactly the steps listed in the link DNO provided, the new image choice will appear in a new selection box next to (right of) the default avatar selections (Profile -> Change Profile Photo).

I have the secondary box, but it's empty.

Hmm it seems to have worked now.
Apparently it can take up to an hour for the character/image to get posted to the site here. For me it only took a few minutes.
Also, for your avatar - Nice

The delay is very confusing... makes you doubt your ability to follow simple instructions.

A lot of people are saying, it is better to ask your friends to view your profile, as updating is done by priority of number of friends profile views to your profile.

Hey, bobobo878, THANKS for posting that quick guide. Most awesome!

Someone asked me how to do this once, and I figured posting a blog about it and linking would be easier than explaining multiple times.

Can I upload my own photos to use as my website avatar?
No, this is not permitted.
Just a heads up that we probably shouldn't overstep the boundaries and be careful what pictures we choose if we create our own avatars. I think it's pretty lame though, considering there's only a handful of official avatars to choose from. Why introduce avatars at all then when you can't express personality with them and they don't help to distinguish between posters?

In other words, no nekkid pikshures, no blood/gore, no obviously heavy handed copyright viles (ie: if it's SW: KotoR, you'll prolly be okay, Mickey Mouse is a definite no-no, as would be a picture of, say, Han Solo (not game material, right?) Others, like the infamous Al Bundy, prolly okay.
Again, just don't shoot for the obscene, the grossout or invade high profile (and aggressive) copyright images and you should be okay. Please be mindful of that.

(recognize that this could be a policy changing issue if not managed wisely -- I will seek to have permanently banned FOREVER anyone screwing this up.)

Good to hear personal avatars are OK. It does make finding your own posts a little easier.
This is also a quick hello to everybody on the new forums. I hope they are as good as the old ones.
Lance.
EDIT: Would it not be too pretentious (or incorrect) to add our awards (from the Vault) to our signatures?
Confirmation would be good to hear if we can do this ourselves.
Lance.
