So far, the unofficial "official" perspective (I just read up on this in the moderator forums this morning) is that, as long as you're using some discretion, it's okay-fine.

In other words, no nekkid pikshures, no blood/gore, no obviously heavy handed copyright viles (ie: if it's SW: KotoR, you'll prolly be okay, Mickey Mouse is a definite no-no, as would be a picture of, say, Han Solo (not game material, right?) Others, like the infamous Al Bundy, prolly okay.

Again, just don't shoot for the obscene, the grossout or invade high profile (and aggressive) copyright images and you should be okay. Please be mindful of that.

(recognize that this could be a policy changing issue if not managed wisely -- I will seek to have permanently banned FOREVER anyone screwing this up.)

So you don't recommend posting avatars depciting characters from non-bioware games?  I figured that this was fair use, but if it's the rules, than I'll take Meta Ridley here down.

Infamous?  Well, OK but come on... give me a woooah Bundy high five!
Seriously though, if it is an issue, I'll change back to the old avatar I used since Oct 17, 2001 on the old boards.

Nope, you're not reading me clearly.  I didn't say that at all.  What I did say, was, colloquially speaking, watch yourself and use some discretion.  Han Solo from the movies?  Huh uh.  Lucas Arts is very aggressive.  Guy Threepwood from Monkey Island -- I don't think so.  You got an avatar of a zombie from Left 4 Dead?  Mmm, maybe.  Mickey Mouse, Pooh Bear (one of my favs) or Tigger?  No way.  Disney'll come and eat your children.

You got an avatar you wanna slap in there from say, Baldur's Gate: Shadows of Amn, you'll most likely be tutti okay.  You wanna put in the Vault Dweller from Vault 13, go for it.  You wanna an avatar from Fallout 3?  You might wanna rethink that.

See how that works?  It's not as important as the game itself as it is the ramifications of who you could potentially upset to the point of legally complaining.  Lucas Arts = really aggressive.  Disney = deadly aggressive.  Bethesda = wouldn't look on it kindly.  It's a matter of paying attention to what you're doing and not being overly zealous or wild without considering the ramifications.

More often than not, though, unless it's patently obscene (and that includes levels of grossness), pornographic, heavily litigated or otherwise in really, really bad taste, have fun and enjoy this new found power and expression of your persona online.

best regards,
dunniteowl

I wonder if the Church of No Ma'am would mind me using their symbolism.

They are an official organization after all.

Well, the character I was considering was from Jet Force Gemini, which is a rather obscure game with no future prospects to speak of... but it was made by Rare, which is owned by Microsoft now.

You're probably okay. MS's big thing is major patent infringement. I don't think they're too nit picky when it comes to this sort of thing.

Plus, it's not like we're trying to make money off forum avatars. Although... I think I like my "nobody" face as it's becoming less and less common. Either that or I don't feel like taking the time to make my own. Haha.

SuperFly_2000; the Character Creation tool is very slow. I have an AMD FX64 dualcore at 2.6Ghz per core. It took about 20 to 30 seconds just to load and I could hear the strain on my PCIe Radeon X1650 Pro w/512M DDR3.

Also (and I'll note this in bobobo878's comments section too) When the directions say to log in, it is meant to log in at the bottom left corner of the character creator screen. I was logged in here and I kept getting an error: Profile Not Found, because the Character Creator application has to have you logged in, not the bioboards as a webpage, savvy? Took me 3 failed attempts before I even noticed the Log In button on the Character Creator. I'm just trying to get this dang zipper unstuck so I can really spread my wings and preen a bit. It's really stuffy in here.

When I tried this, I found that PC names are limited to 10 characters, with no spaces. So, if I want a personal avatar I'll have to open a new account with a shorter name. Since I've used this name from NWN onward, I think I'll skip it. Please enlighten me if I'm wrong. It would be so much simpler if...never mind.

At least I'm not stuck with a chicken.:D

Sieben, that shouldn't matter. Just accept whatever default name the character creater makes for you, then add in your .png portrait as that name. Then upload. That should work. I haven't seen mine yet, so I'm not sure if I'm too smart or too dumb to figure out the instructions, yet.

Then again, I am stuck in a chicken suit, so there's that.

still don't have my avatar uploaded, though - tried 27 times - marked it read only or it changes it back when you update it..... oh, moan......

EDIT: Funny - I was using test pics and nothing worked.  used paint.net and made a real one of my previous avatar and worked instantly.  Go figure!     But happy!!!

Still finding that it takes a long time for an uploaded picture to show up in my profile.

Either that or it's instantaneous.

I still don't know. :(

Unless you just write it in manually in the "Signature" section in the Forum Settings?

Yes, I had not yet spotted the "forum settings" line in the full reply page.

Yes - a long time/never, or immediately - I wanted to change it, it wouldn't take, I thought I might have to delete the old one, it still doesn't take.  oh well - I'll be the "blank" for now!!!
