I never understood the need to make their face masks colored. Why not just have clear screens to see their faces.

Maybe it has something to do with their immune system and light or something.., That would sorta make sense I guess. The less of the B vitamin you have in you, the easier your chances of getting sun burnt fast are, from what I've read anyway..

The developers/artists don't even know what they look like. In the art book that came with ME 1 back in the day they had a couple scetches but completely revamped the design into those helmet wearing beasts

Maybe eye contact is taboo in quarian culture. Or it could have developed over time as a way to maintain a level of privacy in the close quarters of the flotilla.
