- A separate download of Direct X 9-0C is required (usually) to run the Toolset, but should not (never?) be required just to play the game.
- Same thing for .Net (an older version pre-W7).... for Toolset only, not simply to play the game.
Is that correct , or is it still a trial-and-error kind of operation ???
(EDIT -forgot to ask- ) Does using any files/mods/extras for use on a P-W (such as the Client Extension) change the above answers ?

SO I updated my Vista to Win 7, and used my NWN Diamond edition. After a whole bunch of errors and core rebuilds, I finally downloaded 1.69 patch. It lagged like crazy and would not work, and looking into the old forums, I changed to .68 as directed.
So that makes NWN 1 work just fine, but 2 and three, Hoards and Undertide and whatnot, they don't work. It says I need to update my module for compatability. Well, if I do, I get extreme lag that freezes and restarts NWM, or just exits.
I have tried placing NVM in Admin mode, as well as various Compatability modes such as SP3 and such by going through the game properties, but no such luck.
What should I do to fix this?
And I'm sorry but I'm horrible at technical jargon, you'll have to dumb it down for me D:

Also, if some kind soul could post or PM me a link to the correct DirectX 9.0c downlaod that I need for a 64 bit system, I would be very grateful. Microsoft is being a little vague and tricky about which one I need.
Thanks guys!

The NWN2 installation I did under WinXP works flawless under Win7 too. I didn't had to reinstall except I pointed my Win7 documents folder to same as in WinXP. ( I keep my game installations and documents folder on a different drive)

NWN2 needs DX9 fact tidbits for Win7
Download and install: DX9.0c.

For whatever reason, the Win7 sometimes needs to have the old DX9.0c in it to run the toolset. Some folks have gotten away with it, but occasionally, it crashes like you're talking about in your post.

DX9 is not a "downgrade" from DX10 or 11. They are not compatible with each other due to technology changes and can peacefully coexist on your system.
Once again, try:
Download to Hard Drive, save file to disk.
Run the file as a separate program.
Don't run it as an update, either through DX or Windows.
Others have successfully done this, so you can too. Don't give up.
Report back here with how you tried (if unsuccessful) and do your best to note:
System Specs, Steps taken and results.
Most of all: Stay Calm, we know how frustrating it can be, but ranting here won't really help you.

I recently bought a new computer and tried to reinstall Neverwinter Nights 2 on it. I keep getting the error message "the CD key you have entered is invalid." This is the CD key printed on the inside of the manual cover. How do I get my game installed?
Do you have the gold edition with the Mask of the Betrayer expansion?
I think that one printing of the manual reversed the Mask of the Betrayer expansion and core game keys. Try entering the MotB for the core game and the core game key into MotB expansion install.

I'd be more up front helpful, but I'm using an older and slower computer and my internets aren't flowing through them pipes as good as Dubya implied they do.
Please carefully read the Sticky Topics and pick the one the looks like it might hold some answers for ya.

No reason other than the game requires Direct X 9.0c and both versions of Direct X can be installed at once? No, no reason at all.ibervang wrote...

I have windows 7 64 bit, and I also had issues installing nwn2. I followed the instructions from this thread for a successful instal and full patch:

To answer your question, no, Directx 11 does NOT work. You do have to dl the directx 9.0c redistributable, on top of the directx 11.

I know I've said this in any thread about this, but once again, I will repeat:
DX9 is a completely separate install and will not corrupt, overwrite or downgrade any newer versions of DX. They do peacefully coexist on your harddrive. In many cases of Win7, installation is a simple task of installation and it works. However, Win7 64 bit and in some cases, minor hardware and firmware variations between manufacturers make it necessary to get and download the older version DX9.0c in order to run the game. More often than not, Win7 issues are either this or someone trying to use newer video drivers for their cards when those cards are not specifically listed as being addressed in those updates to the drivers.
With Win Vista the best fix is to revert to Windows XP or get Win7. Vista is more of a dog today than Win Me was back in the day. (I still have a laptop on Win Me that runs fine, but it's waaay older than some of you -- kidding. But it's like 9 years old or more.)
And in case you meant in addition to DX11 that would be true, though Win7 comes with DX11.
