While their new faces look at least "okay"(though the old ones were much better in my opinion), their armor and weapons look cartoony and not intimidating at all. Please, Bioware, revert this change or maybe redesign Darkspawn to make them more scary-looking.

First of all, how do you know those are darkspawn? Besides the ogre, those don't look like darkspawn...And i hope they are not! Second of all it has been said a lot of times that these are NOT the final graphics. You expect the graphics to be done already, when the game will ship 1 year later? The story, the script is finished but nothing else i presume...

The topic title should sound like PLEASE CHANGE THE DARKSPAWN (like with something else)

Those ARE Darkspawn. Confirmed in Gameinformer. The models look finished to me so it is quite likely that they won't change anything considering the amount of work they have to do.

I agree. Bioware has made a lot of changes to Dragon Age, but the new Darkspawn look silly, especially the Ogre. The Darkspawn in Dragon Age: Origins were slightly frightening. They looked like the Locust's (Gears of War) more frightening cousin. This time I can't help but be reminded of the Putties from the Power Rangers show I watched when I was a kid.

The dialogue wheel, pre-determined race and name, and the new combat I could handle and somewhat appreciate, but why the new art direction? It looked fine before. Why did you guys have to "fix" it?

Hm, I dunno if I would describe their armor as 'cartoony.' I'm not sure what constitutes 'cartoony.' There are a lot of different types of cartoon styles. The most obvious 'cartoonization' I can think of would be in Wind Waker, but these darkspawn don't look cel-shaded or anything like that. (and Wind Waker was a fine game regardless, IMO)

The armor is angular and a bit ugly, yes.

I think what makes them less intimidating is the jarring contrast of colors exposing the nakedness more... it makes me think they either need new armor or they need to cover up more, because they look like they're part time gigolos (unsuccessful gigolos, one would hope) with all of that exposed pasty white flesh in contrast to their BDSM-style stealth bomber outfits.

Well, I'm not to fond of the new armor design either, but I'd much rather they be wearing THAT than nothing at all... :o

I like their armour, as it looks cheaply put together and tatty. The faces of the hurlocks really bug me though. They just look like lipless humans now.

After going back to compare the armor worn by hurlocks in Origins and the armor worn by them now, their Origins armor look way to detailed for a group of near mindless subhumans

Posted Image

The new look fits their background better. They look like mutant humans, rather than orcs, which would fit them originating from the punished humans who tried usurp the Maker.
They have white skin because they live underground.
Their armor consists of loose metal slabs because mindless aberrations and ghoul slaves wouldn't be great smiths.
They may not be intimidating individually, but the Darkspawn aren't threats in small numbers, they only are threatening when they gather large numbers during Blights and are lead by an Archdemon.

I like the new Darkspawn as they seem far less generic and more stylized. IMO.

The old hurlocks looked much better in my opinion and they do remind me of mutated humans. Yes, the armor they wore is perhaps too sophisticated. I'm okay with loose metal slabs but why do these slabs all look like they came from a stealth bomber? That's what bugs me the most.

Crimson Sound, now that you've mentioned Putties it's all I'll be able to think about whenever I see these new darkspawn. That's not entirely a bad thing.

Lord Zedd as the main antagonist of Dragon Age 2? There's potential.

And, once again, David Gaider said the game already looks better than those screenshots.

Although, I am guessing the actual appearance won't change, the textures and stuff might look better ;)

I want the darkspawn to look like those Twilight sparkly vampires.

It will inspire pure hatred and add to the satisfaction of killing them.

because you'd have to be stupid to not know they are dardkspawn...first they don't look human or like any other race (like the Qun) revealed yet...the armor on the Ogre is pointy just like the armor they are wearing...and if you see one close up they look pale and "dead"

common sense would dictate......what here?

those were darkspawn, like it or not.  and yes they NEED CHANGED

Okay maybe i am wrong, and those are darkspawn (sadly)....I wished they won't put us to fight darkspawn again, and find something else to battle :(

As for the final graphics, i found one of the posts where Mary was saying those are not final. There was one by David Gaider i believe, but i cannot find it. So those graphics (armor/weapons and such) are not final.

Either way, I'm gonna foudly remember the day I opened up my GI mag and laughed hearty at the sight of the hurlocks in their gigolo loincloths and steathbomber armor.

You read more into the statement than it actually stated.

All she said is that she believes the weapon (and weapon only) is a placeholder. She doesn't mention anything about other weapons or armor undergoing changes.

What makes you think they aren't different versions of darkspawn?

In DAO all the darkspawn looked alike 'cos there wasn't enough budget to make several different versions of them

I bet they made them appear less fearsome and primitive simply because they want us to focus on a larger threat this time around...

they could also be setting us up for....a Darkspawn follower *gasp*

I know that idea is retard but I would have been laughed out of the forums had I suggested a Geth squad-mate when ME2 was still just skuddle-butt on the threads.
