I realize there are threads about the "return of DA:O companions in DA:2" already, but that isn't really what I am addressing in this thread, so I figured I'd make my own thread and see what the general feeling of other people was on it.
In Origins Sten was one of my favorite companions. My main reason for this was that he was a fairly multi-layered character. He comes from a strict, rigid culture with very defined views on the world and people's places within it. He generally conducts himself in a manner that is off-putting due to his cultural background, but genuinely does not mean harm by it. Underneath the exterior though are his softer side (such as his banter with Leliana about the kitten) his more sentimental side (we see this in the Fade when he recognizes what he's seeing of his Beresaad companions is a "dream" he remarks "but it is a good dream") and we see a friendlier side when he comes to regard the Warden highly throughout the story. (Not to mention his love for cookies and art) While I realize the tough guy with a soft side archetype is not unique when it is done well I tend to like it, and I feel like Sten was done very well. (In my nerdy mind he's like the Worf of DA:O)
I would like to see a companion in DA:2 similar to Sten in the regard that he has the off-putting front, but once you get familiar with the character its easy to grow to like them and feel as much attachment towards a virtual person as you can. I don't care if the companion is Qunari, human, warrior, mage. Doesn't really matter. I just like the way Sten was done and would like to see the personality archetype make a return in DA:2.
Thoughts?

I would like to see Sten back too in DA2, or a character a little like him who converted to the Qun.

I'm fine with not having Sten back. He went back North. If we run into him it would be cool. I just hope we get a companion that mirrors the multi-layered hard-ass softy thing he had going. I really enjoyed him.

I say this. Depending on your old game decisions maybe. Bioware will let your hawke get a quick counter of sten.

My favourite tough but soft in the inside archetype is the one with a very tragic past what forged him into the man he is today.
Like my favourite warrior character Nogren Preadarmon: He was born at a time of war, his parents were killed, he got enlisted as soon as he could bear a sword, lived as a soldier as far as he can remember, had a last stand so epic it made him a legend, he was presumed dead.
Actually he got captured and made into a slave with a few others, after years of enduring hardship a few of them escaped, lived as marauders for a long time, slowly moving towards friendly territory.
They got rescued eventually and settled far far away, had a happy life, he even got married.
But a group of knights from a dark order found him (they swore an oath of vengeance to kill everyone who fought against them and killed their brethren), killed his friends and beloved, burned his domain to the ground and left him to die. With his remaining strenght he memorised the face of their leader and passed out. He was found nearly dead and after he recovered he embarked on an epic quest to kill that man he will never forget.
After many years he tracked him down with a help from group of adventurers, and finally got to duel him. Man those pages describing the fight and raging emotions are the best I've ever read.
His story is very dark and bitter, but atleast he killed the man "who destroyed his life and robbed him of the future" in the end.

I'm not asking for Sten. I'd rather the companions be unique to DA:2.
