On Vista/Win7 you do NOT want to install to the default folder (rights issues due to UAC).Install to a new directory instead. So instead of (c:\\program files (x386)\\baldurs gate\\) (or whatever it is), change to something like (C:\\games\\baldurs gate\\). Then you won't get the rights problems and you can install and run your game.

Hmm this site changed my slash to double-slash. Everywhere in my post you see a double-slash I mean a single slash.

When you install baldur's gate, it will ask where do you want to install it. It will by default in Vista go to c:\\program files (x386)\\blah blah blah...you do NOT want it in program files. put it in c:\\games\\bg instead. I am not sure how else to say it, I don't have the install with me right now so can't say click this button, etc. You got any friends of family that might be able to understand my post? Again if this site changed my slashes to double I mean single.

Well when I hit install I get a box that says do I trust the file or not? I hit accept and then it does nothing

is there a way for me to get into the files and change it?

Ah, sounds like you need to run the game setup as administrator. Browse the CD for SETUP.EXE and right-click it and run as administrator. That might get you past that.

Or disable UAC while running the install... that's probably the popup you're getting. I'd just disable UAC and leave it that way.

To disable UAC on your Vista laptop, go Start--->Control Panel. In the upper right search box, type "UAC". It should only return one hit, bring that up and disable it.

Did you disable your UAC like the other person suggested? It's a really good idea to disable anti-virus during the install too. Most anti-virus programs allow you to right click the icon on the task bar and disable it.

You could try and run it in compatibility mode for Widows 95 or XP, right click the setup.exe and click properties and compatibility and set it to either Windows 95 or XP.

This problem's usually circumvented by starting Windows in safe mode and running the installer from there.

Every time that I've reinstalled BG or BG2, I cannot click the install button on the initial screen but have to look at the disk's contents and select the Setup application there and the games installation process begins. I can then create a folder to place the game outside of Program Files.

The old forums have a thread for installation tips for vista here http://forums.biowar...620091&forum=10

Win7 suggestions were mostly the same, though there is a separate thread here http://forums.biowar...700768&forum=10

the summary of it is with default Vista settings, the security settings restrict what the user can do in terms of installing new programs, so that's why people recommend disabling the UAC or setting the file to run as administrator (or both).

There are also different security settings on anything under the default "program files" folders, which is where BG2 and TOB want to install by default. Changing it to a "games" folder right off the root of the hard drive and NOT in the "program files" folders will eliminate that issue as well.

Both the threads above have much more specific info there, give them a read.

That being said, there is a BG1 and 2 technical support forum, a mod should probably move this there so the general discussion doens't get cluttered with technical support threads.

UAC does not protect your computer from viruses. It protects your computer from you.

Since most people say that this firstly is an insult and secondly stands completely in the way and takes up a lot of time (You just pressed a button. Are you sure you wanted to press that button?) it's become one of the least popular features of Vista/7. I recommend you leave it off. ;)
