We all love Morrigan. But what of Flemeth, the original Witch of the wild? Who is She? Where does she come from?
My interest in this character is due to her similarity with Baba Yaga, the Slav witch that lives in the hut with chicken legs. Plus she radiates a sense of mystery which awakens my curiosity. So I would like to collect a detailed collection of facts and lore about her: This might help other DA fans to later conjecture more and come closer to the heart of the mystery that surrounds her.
1. Flemeth was married to the Tyern of Highever, Conobar Elsten in the third age of the divine or the Age of Towers. What she did before that is uncertain. There are two versions of this event. Conobar married to Flemeth, and she ran away with Osen OR Osen married to Flemeth and Osen killed by Conobar and marrying Flemeth. What she did before that is unknown. She was very beautiful and obviously an able mage. She called upon spirits to avenge the death of her lover but the spirits drove her mad and she became a twisted crazed creature as she killed Conobar and the rest and vanished into the wilds or so tale the says. This happens about 700-650 years ago. In all honesty, I believe this timeline as there is NO mention of Flemeth before this... A witch as powerful as her deserves advertisements, no?
2. The next time we actually hear of her exploits, its already quite ahead in time. She has been called the Witch of the Wilds by the chasind barbarians. They fear her and her daughters that entice men and steal their souls (so is the rumor). But she again rises to fame when, the Korcari witches supposedly lead an army against the Almarri tribes to be defeated by Cormac. But then Morrigan presents an alternative to this as well. This happens about 100 years from her escape to the wilds. That is about 600-550 years ago.
3. After this her directly know exploit involves meeting with Maric. She makes some unknown deal with him for some reason. This takes place about 30 years in the past.
4. Cut to story timeline: She has somehow obtained the Grey warden treaties breaking their magical seal or getting them when it was broken with time. She knows that the importance of this document as she expects GWs to come looking for them. She seems to have a definite plan by this time. When they do arrive she gets them the treaties WITHOUT any conditions and even warns of a looming Blight. Utterly hospitable, she seems to act a bit batty, whether intentionally or not.
5. She rescues only two GWs from Ostagar and heals them. She even provides Morrigan as a companion to the PC, who seems reluctant, but we later find out how it was all sham.
6. Morrigan lets us into the fact that she has seen Flemeth as a young Dark Haired woman.
7. We discover Flemeth's Grimoire on Morrigan's behest. This tells Morrigan that Flemeth intends to use her body for next renting place. Morrigan tries to put a Not Available sign using the GW.
8. We encounter Flemeth (in absence of Morrigan) and she turns into a Dragon if we choose to kill her. A High-freaking-Dragon. She changes her name to Flemeth the Shape-shifter.
9. On death she does not turn back into a human.
10. This gives the GW the real Grimoire and a curious dress called "Robes of possession".
11. Morrigan claims that this may not have killed Flemeth, but now is better prepared to face her in the future with the Real Grimoire being in her possession.
12. Morrigan proposes the OGB idea and confesses that it was planned all along. Thus telling us that she knew of the ritual WITHOUT the help of the Grimoire.
Phew.
Facts we know for sure:
1. Flemeth was indeed married to Conobar in the Tower age (700 years ago) and murdered him. Couslands became Tyerns a result of which.
2. Flemeth has a gift of foresight or is terribly smart.
3. Flemeth was an abomination at some point of time. Perhaps still is. The possession might be multiple: "The demon came much later" -Morrigan. It might have assumed the identity of the real Flemeth.
4. Flemeth is a VERY powerful shape-shifter. A high-dragon????? That can easily fell a small army.... Plus she nearly resurrects the GWs AFTER saving them from impossible odds.
5. Flemeth and Morrigan are a constant pair of Mother and Daughter. Whether the name Morrigan is Stickied or not is not known. But the daughter is always a Dark, Exotic beauty.
6. Flemeth is more than just a woman or even a Witch. She embodies an idea... a mystery, a legend, a warning and more, a Cautionary tale.
7. She is a thief of souls. She can steal souls is every which way described by all the sources. may have some truth to it.
8. She has the knowledge of Rituals that allow capturing of Old God souls into unborn babies.
9. She knows GW lore with detail.
10. She wants the OGB so badly that she plots for it VERY much in advance.
11. She has taught Morrigan to an extent that Morrigan knows the stupidity/futility of bargaining with Demons.
12. She is extremely Utilitarian (and Machiavellian)
That kind of sums her character.
Now time for speculations:
I think that Flemeth possesses the spirit of Mystery or Survival. She is personified by the idea of Strangeness... She is a riddle more than a Human. She is a warning that things are not always how they have happened earlier but can e drastically different. It is my belief that the Woman Flemeth is all but Gone (there may be some remains there left though, asserting themselves through the story of Conobar for eexample). She is akin to the two ravens of elven lore, Deceit and Fear, and she could be an abomination through their possession. That may mean that she draws strength from fear of others (as other demons do).
Then again, she could be the Old god Razikale, the Dragon of mystery.. She seems to have the powers displayed by the old gods like Soul volleyball, Lets play High-dragons and You-kill-me-I get-another-body. But she never references the Black city. NEVER. Her only known direct conenction to Old Gods is her interest in securing the OGB.
I don't think she was Andraste. The chronological evidence, if correct, is against that. I don't think she is Morrigan either. They are a pair, a constant one at that, but distinct.
So who is she really?
