Wow, what a project! It will be really neat to see all the pieces come together. One idea: little cube of garbage that can pop out the trash compactor? Ha... completely unnecessary, but still hilarious. I always wanted Zaeed to yell at me for fiddling with that thing while he was in the middle of telling me his war stories.

Dude, as a model builder and admirer this is amazing. Bioware needs to hire you so they can reproduce a bunch of these. Simply amazing.

Do you plan on making more or selling this one? :) I think this'll be cool. Bioware hire this man to make yourselves more money than what you make with the somewhat overpriced dlc.

so i just ordered another part.

this time its the top cover of the central engine part along with some gears and levers to test my measurements.

also for those interested i made a little size comparison chart of both normandy's real sizes. this is based on the assumption that the airlock on the side of the snip next to the cockpit is 2 meters wide. (i based that on the final cutscenes where you see joker standing there)

Posted Image

In turn that means my maquette is exactly 1:180 scale

also here's some info i though about putting into the base of the ship. note its just words on paper right now i havent actualy designed the base yet.: i intend to go the full its a collectors item route. the base will feature a cerberus logo design and and it will have the Mass effect logo aswel as the words Normandy SR2 embeded in it, and

it will also have a gold plated stainless steel coin that will be the centerpiece of the base. this coin will probably have a picture of the normandy SR2 on it and say SR2 below it. The back will most likely be blank so it wont damage any images when you put it on there, as it will be held in place by a magnet. (i might change that though i could probably put some velvet in the place where you can put the coin and put the magnet behind that)

just a little update i thought you guys might enjoy, thanks for all the kind words.

@Mako Zalos i intend to keep this one. although i will not discount the possibility of me selling it at some point. and the chances of me making another one are slim to none really. the final expected production costs for this model is close to 1000 euro's som even if i were to make another one and sell that off i do want to at least make a slight profit on it and i doupt i'd be able to sell it for that much.

besides i think bioware will shoot me down before that. although they could make a silicon mould of all the parts and make another one like that. thats probably gonna reduce the production costs considerably (maybe something to look into eh bioware :P)

i kind of want to get a little poll going. i'm thinking of doing a small mass effect model to print but i want you guys to decide which. now i already have a small mass relay for on my desk planned after i do the normandy (with actual spinning rings and a small hand held fan motor to power it)
or sovereign with posable limbs and lights (note these projects are scheduled after the normandy sr2)

but i want to guys to pick which small model i would make. get a little community thing going here.
the ones i am considering are:
An aliance fighter
http://masseffect.wi...nce_Fighter.jpg
The combat cockroach (ut-47 Kodiak "Drop-Shuttle")
http://masseffect.wi...iak_Shuttle.png

this would be a simple model nothing like the scale of the normandy i am doing.
something perhaps 10 cm in length. perhaps even to scale with the normandy sr2.
these two i am considering right now. but if you guys have a cooler model i can make at the scale of those two i mentioned above please let me know.

note this will not delay the Normandy at all i have a small backlog of finished components which i can send off to the printers once i get confirmation that the smaller pieces i have will print properly.

next piece of my model is due to arrive either wednesday or thurseday.
it'll be a test print of several of the gears, rollers and their mounts and the top cover of the middle engine piece. The purple highlighted piece here
Posted Image

the reason i didnt go for the big bottom one aswel is that its big and rather expenive. and since the top piece also has the same rollers mounts i figured i'd better test it on a cheaper piece. My measurements are pretty accurate but these printers have a minimum acuracy of 0.2 mm so there is always a small margain for error.
based on my measurements this engine when the engine pod is fully extended will be 75 cm long.

I kinda love and hate you right now, Havoc. Love because your model is incredible (and Bioware will hopefully hire you to make thousands for sale), but hate because I thought the SR2 model I'm making out of wood and plasticard was good until I saw what you're going to do.

Major kudos man, can't wait to see more!

Ps... I don't really hate you!

hehe. on the flip side yours is probably one hell of alot cheaper than mine and will take less time to make. also yours will probably feature a bit more craftsmanship than mine. mine is simply make the model in 3D print it and then glue it together. (and paint it etc) yours i imagine would require alot more hands on manufacturing.
how about some screenshots of yours? i'd love to see what other people are doing on their SR2 models. (i know there are a few people out there making one)

I love you, man.

I've been waiting on a model Normandy SR1 or SR2 since I saw those puppies. I pray your model gets into some sort of production.

As far your work is concerned so far: Looks great so far. Looking forward to seeing your build process, assuming you decide to do one similar to the person who did the M8 Assault Rifle. That's be sweet.

i am posting pics of every stage of production. it wont be a step by step tutorial. because that would be kind of hard to do seeing as i would be teaching you how to model in 3d then make sure you know how to produce all the models in such a way they can be printed.

would be kind of hard to do IMHO

but never the less all progress i make will be posted in this thread.

and it looks like i will be recieving my next component a little later than expected. most likely monday.

maybe saturday but i am not holding my breath.

The thing about hand crafting everything is that it's just a nightmare to fit together. Even though I drew up the elevations and plans of the main components in cad it's still impossible to match the accuracy of your plotter. There's a lot of trial and error...trimming, cutting.
In fairness to you, I think your process has just as much craftsmaship though, it's just a different sort.
I'll make sure I take some photos tomorrow of my build so far and post them here.

Ok wait ... 3d printer?

Tell me more. I understand you make a computer model of the Normandy (a hard process itself already) and then you have it printed? Obviously some sort of carving machine or something....I think I've heard of one like this.

But then you say you are 'ordering' your parts? Do you send it off to someone to do for you? Wow, that is cool. What are the parts made out of and could you tell me more about this 3d printer? How do you stick all the parts together at the end?

yes i send them off to someone with a 3d printer. he then takes my model and prints the pieces out for me.
its not a carving machine. its a machine that takes a pool of small nylon based plastic powder and used a laser to melt the small plastic particles together in the patern of my 3d model and once 1 layer is done it moves another layer of powder 0.1mm thick over the previous layer and then it repeats that procces. each layer takes roughly 30 seconds up to a minute to complete with the laser. which can lead to some models taking close to 24 hours for a single piece to print.
the maximum printing surface of my model is 23x18x31 cm
so its impossible to print the normandy in one go (it would also be insanely expensive)
in onder to be able to afford the whole thing i only order like one or two parts per production run. that way i nly have to spend a smaller amount of money to make the whole thing per month.
it also lets me print while i'm still working on the model.

the material is a nylon based plastic as i said earlyer.
its called PA2200 SLS (selective laser sintered) look it up

i model my parts in such a way that they interlock. i also put little tabs on them where i can put glue when its time to assemble the whole thing together.

wow...that is awesome!

How much does it cost per piece like this?

depends on how much material is used in the printing procces. thus far the cheapest piece is the tip of the smaller engine which is about 14 euro's the most expensive so far is the middle piece of the bigger engine which is what comes after my current order comes in. and thats 80 euro's
most pieces thus far have come in at between 20 to 30 euro's
and then to think that there are 2 wings :P

Ok, so here are 3 photos of how my build is coming along. I'm part way through cladding the main hull with plasticard, going to start arranging the fibreoptics and port-holes after it's clad. You can see the battery compartment in one of the photos.

Looks really great, can't wait to see this finished, love the work you put into the technical parts!
