I might PM you later on this term about your project. In my engineering program we have to design a vehicle using AUTO CAD and other programs, then use the rapid prototyping machine to have it fabricate our design from the designs.
Lucky for me, it's free. And so exact that it can produce an internal combustion engine with real working pistons.

lucky you.
yeah those printers arent avaible at my current print shop. although they might apear soon.
i'm asuming that your printers use either wax or terracotta? those the only printers i know of that have extremly high detail. i could be wrong though.
then again my printers can produce that same engine just at a larger scale

Seems a little big for a "toy," but I nonetheless am interested. Keep us updated!
There are some really big toys out there.

new components update.

The smaller components were a little smaller than i expexted especialy the rollers. but i have found a new set of pins that will hold those in place so no problem
that peg thats suposed to hold the longer gear on was too thick and i couldnt put the gear on it so i'm going to re-order that. its small and easy to fix so i wont go broke over it.
the large engine cover fit like a glove
all the openings in it are perfect no blockages or print errors what so ever. next up the base of the engine cover. need to make a few small tweaks to it before i order
The hull construction so far is now 47 centimeter long (a little over 18 inches)
enjoy and, as always feedback and comments are much apriciated. (now to get back to finishing LotSB

NICE WORK!!
what size is it?
I love how your using the strips of plasticard to simulate the armor plates.
Meanwhile the parts i ordered still havent arived!
i'm stuck till i get those
It's 600mm long, so not too big and not too small. I do kinda wish it was bigger though as certain parts are really fiddley and balsa wood doesnt hold together very well. Also at this scale the lighting is proving to be a bigger headache than I first thought, as it's a nightmare to construct little 'light boxes' for the cabins and the fibreoptics arent as bendy as I had hoped.
But yeah, I'm really pleased with the plasticard, the strips are cut and lined up in the same position as the hull plating on the actual Normandy.
I saw this video today of a $1500 printer and thought of your build. Might save you a few bob in the long run, hehe.

yeah i still have to start on a lighting scheme for this puppy. i plan to use fiber optics aswel. although a friend of mine had the idea of simply grabbing a utp cable and cutting that up into the pieces you need. much more flexible. dunno if it will get me the results i want but i'm gonna try it anyway.
i wish i could aford one of those. on the other hand it would be useless for the normandy. as you saw in the video the base was very flexible and the material stayed deformed after he ripping the main piece off. my material is also flexible but more rigid and it keeps its shape better once its been bent

Wow. That's a cool project. A long term one too. How long will it take you to finish it?
