Personally im tired of mages being borring old schoolars standing at the back , unablet to attack and parry with their staves . Instead of traditional archetype why shouldnt millitant mages be more of shaolin monk type of characters , real staves are very dangerous weapons in melle , and use of magic supposedly requires strong body so i would immagine that martial training would be as important to mages as it would be to warriors .  I think more oriental designs for mages could be an interesting concept .

Arcane warrior?

Really though, it's a balance. You can't give mages melee if warriors don't get magic.

That's not even remotely the same thing, especially when it comes to balancing the game.  The reason mages aren't upfront fighters with all the melee abilities of rogues/warriors is because they would be the ultimate class in every situation.  If you start giving every class the abilities of every other class then suddenly they're all the same and there's no reason to have the class system at all.

personally i see no issue with introducing some flexibility to classes . Considering that you are heroes  going against unbeatable odds , being super human should be must . So mages have martial training to deal with various situations . ninjas with unique martial art ,speed and supernatural abillities . and warriors with their brute strength , agility , unique martial arts , thick amor and some magic traits .

About difficulty and balance : trying AI director  from left for dead would be a fresh way to deal with difficulty . Enemies donst level up as you go , there just more of them , more more shock troops , more elites and so on and they get better equipment faster though the game . For standard encountres game decides what to throw at you .

This is why you have difficulty levels so you aren't so godly!Image IPB
