Yep, controlling one of your party members works just the same way controlling your character does.

Only un-enchanted weapons break. Lots of creatures drop various weapons, so it should be pretty easy to keep a stock of weapons in case they break.

After you find enchanted weapons, those don't break. You should be able to save up to buy one (or find one) relatively early on.

Magical weapons will not break. But they aren't very expensive so you should be able to have 2 spares with you at all times (and enemies drop their weapons too).

Keep in mind that since you dueled Imoen to a Mage (so she could use spells), she wont be really good for scouting ahead/getting rid of traps. In BG1 you definitely need a full time, or at least multi-classed thief, there are many times you will die without it. Montaron is a nice thief, plus you get him early.

Weapons... dont worry about them, after the first like 3 hours of the game, you really dont have that problem, go everywhere, see everything, and you'll find your weapons.

Imoen as a Thief->Mage is great for scouting. Just cast Invisibility and she can scout and disarm traps with impunity. Invisibility is broken by opening locks, however.

Hi all!!! I'm new to the game as well and I have a question. Do we get to explore any snow covered areas in BG II? I just love the snow setting :)

No. There is no snow in BG2.

Imoen is more than enough as thief in the game. There's very few dungeons, and even fewer traps in BG 1+2 compared to Icewind Dale 1+2.

great and i thought i kicked my BG habit.. just one more game.. just one..

as others have said read the manual and you will die alot less, although as you have discovered dying happens very often in these games, they are very unforgiving to new players.

Save often. There is, the first time through, a significant amount of 'oh damn what did I just walk into' that gets you killed, which you then approach a second time with better planning. Sometimes for those of us who have played half a dozen times or more, we forget that.

It's different than a lot of modern games that smoothly level you up with your challenges and make it unlikely to die unless you do something particularly foolish.

Umm...this is Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition.

When you're low level you will die. Fast.

In BG1, if you install the Drizzt Saga, you end up in Icewind Dale and also the Nine Hells.

However, NOT for a new player.

I reckon myself experienced in BG1 and died a lot. Fun though, particularly if played towards the end of BG1.

I think everyone has covered the most necessary advice. I just want to say that I am COMPLETELY jealous of you right now.

I still replay BG1 and BG2 very very often (I'm in the midst of yet another fighter/mage run right now). But I will never get play these games for the first time again.

So the most important piece of advice I can give: Enjoy playing one of the best series of games ever.
