wow...and LOL I think it is simple. Sovereign said they are Gods and have always been. As I stated earlier that is something they believe because their creators obviously left that part out. I say this because AFAIK only organic life is natural evolution. Nature has never made a machine race, so this had to be something their creators made either to become immortal or as a defense or an army. They now believe they have just always been this way. I think they are only following a program written millions if not billions of years ago.

We honestly don't know if Reapers can mate, as in 2 of them joining physically or even perhaps wirelessly since they are multiple computer minds. So are they using other species to reproduce or simply to add to their genetic gene pools?

It can't be, because:
a) Reapers are machines. Time is nothing to them. They do not get bored.
B) They are shut down to conserve energy when they are in dark space until certain stimuli awaken them. It would be like sleeping through the night, essentially.

They certainly are dicks, though, but for reasons we don't really understand. :P

Machines get bored....EDI gets bored, she says "some seconds are longer than others"...or something.

Picture LUke Sky walker....he had so little to do, that his only entertainment was shooting defenseless animals.... damn psycopath. But still you get too bored, and your mind wonders.

They might have arrived at a point were:

Soverign:.....we have achieved the apex of our evolution, nothing is before us, nothing beyond us, we are infinite.

Unknown reaper: purpose is nothing to us... yet I feel the strange sensation that a thousand minids scream within me, and unknown emptyness never felt before.

harbringer: I too have felt such...unfathonamble...yet undeniable... let us squish soft things for entertainment (relation to Shale DA)

millions of years later:

Soverign: A new apex has been achieved, our endless time in the universe will be spent squishing soft flesh creatures for amuzement, all those in favor say ...squish.

And there you have it....they got bored...and started squishing...squishies...and before long, it was their hobby...it made them whole...free of all weaknesses, strong, determined to carry their job/hobby.

Their reasons are beyond our comphrehension...or at least beyond the average healthy sentient... I am sure some weird lonely, bored psycopath feels sympathy.

EDI says that in this video around 2:50, it's about maintaining stability and furthermore, also probably about what she can process alone as compared to what a mind the size of a galactic arm could process.

Machines do not feel time. They are infinitely patient.

You're talking in hypothetical situations that seem really far off for me to believe, and Luke Skywalker isn't a machine, either. I don't think you actually understand the concept that machines do not experience feelings of anger or boredom or love or hate. Everything to them is logic.

The reapers insist they're the instruments of our salvation rather than destruction- It could be mere egotism, but what if it's not? Remember the mission when you pick up Tali? She says something's wrong with the star, that it's decaying much faster than it should- This isn't ever explained, save beyond a mention of possible Dark Energy interference. Later, we overhear Gianna state she's worried about her client's increased interest in dark energy.

As you might know, Dark Energy is the force manipulated by Element Zero. It's also the reason the universe may be slowly accelerating away from each other.

But what it's more than that? What if there's an ebb and flow of dark energy that follows a natural cycle? Or some detrimental effect to its spreading use among the galaxy? What if Haestrom's star is just the first of many? Perhaps the entire galaxy may eventually follow suit, its stars aging and dying much more rapidly than they should, and obliterating galactic life. Perhaps this is what the first Reaper was meant to prevent- An ark ship of sorts, to store a species' consciousness and genetic material and flee beyond the Galactic plane, far from the burning touch of any dying star. Perhaps after the galaxy was born anew and life flourished once more, it returned and tried to warn the species there of things to come- And they refused to believe it. The reaper made the choice to preserve the races of the galaxy whether they wanted it or not, and thus the cycle of harvesting began.

The Reapers wait for the point where the Space-fairing species have evolved their technology just short of defeating the Reapers. That way, Reapers maintain their technological advantage enough to secure their continued survival, but still gain the benefits of new technologies and ideas from species, as well as cleaning up the Galactic scene so that new species can make the transition from global to Galactic powers.

Cpuld be destroying the reapers destroys the balance of power, and we all get obliterated by the Good o'l Grox, the red fuzzy little ageless immortal machine killing......well...uh...machines we all hate.

On a more or less serious note (you decide) They could do it simply because they are programmed to, they say that their reasons are beyond organic comprehension, but really they could  be using that as an excuse for not knowing the reason why.

Ok while that did make me laugh, it didn't really add anything to this thread.
