Posted ImagePosted ImageSo we know that we have no origins in DA2.  Despite this, will people react if our Hawke is a mage? I ask because it seems like mages have a stigma attached to them; apparently, that tends to happen when you can blow up a house with a fireball, much less become possessed by a demon.

The other part of this thread is this: what do we know about how mages are treated in the Free Marches and/or Kirkwall?  I'm used to the Circle of Ferelden so how do things work in DA2's setting?

I'm aware that we know little so this thread is as much about fact as speculation.  I'd appreciate everybody's opinions.

there's an article about the timeline of Thedas On Game Informer's website that explains Kirkwall is run by templars and they rule over the mages in Kirkwall with as Iron fist. I think this is going to make DA2 very interesting because it is confirmed that Hawke's sister is a mage and also if the PC is a mage. Perhaps, the champion of Kirkwall will overthrow the templars if you so choose? Probably not, but you never know. ....

It'd be funny if it were sorta like BG2.

You use magic, then wonderful little sacks of experience pop up and try to accost you. After you sell off their valuables from their rotting, frozen, or melting corpses, you rinse and repeat until they finally learn to back off.

Well seeing as Kirkwall is heavily Templar controlled I'm thinking you will be treated even worse than in Ferelden and such.

I so hope Templars randomly attack us, yelling "IN THE NAME OF THE MAKER" or something.

If I recall, Bethany (and Hawke if zie's a mage) was taught by her father, who was an apostate. That would make things quite interesting in templar territory.

The mages are housed in an Old Tevinter slave pit/barracks in Kirkwall from what I read, and it's suppoed to be a rather oppresive, dark and unpleasant place. Supposedly, ten times worse than Kinloch.

I just hope you can turn in your sister or something. With the dangers of magic and the chantry after me the positives far outweigh the negatives turning her in for me becoming Champion.

I'm sure that the mage protagonist will have a killer experience. From what I hear, mages are treated rather badly in kirkwall and with Hawke's father and sister being apostates there are sure to be confrontations with Templars. These confrontations will only be exacerbated if Hawke also happens to be a mage and also in the trailer vids there are what seems to be images of a mage uprising against the Templars.

I feel sorry for your Hawke's sister. Her brother is a bastard, and a chantry tool. Oh and don't forget your Hawke's father who helped raised you was a mage.. So yeah.

Anyway I HOPE Templars keep on attacking me in the game.  My Hawke needs a regular source of income.

I need to cover my nose for the stench of necromancy is about. :P

I like Altima Darkspells's idea above about mirroring BG2's Cowled Wizard approach to templar encounters. It would be nice if there were at least as many mage reactions as in Origins too. At least we know there are a few dialogues where Hawke gestures based on class choice. It would be a shame if there little acknowledgment when the Free Marches has one of the largest templar strongholds anywhere. At least I remember that being mentioned by a dev at some point.

I think the initial stages of the game may be quite the showcase of prejudice and brutality, given that we're refugees and they're often not very welcome or at least tend to occupy the lower socioeconomic rungs of wherever they are, but also with the zealot druggies coming after the mages amongst us, and MY Hawke is probably going to be rather fond of his sister and likely to object to Chantry opression should some come up

random thought, what if this mage uprising we're hearing about is related to that plan the Libertarians were putting forward in Awakening at the meeting Wynne was headed to? As I recall. they wanted to split from the chantry, and I can see some armed conflict arising over that propositions
