That's funny. It was shield bash that got me thinking about the combat system on a fundamental level, back more than a year ago. The question I kept asking myself as a sword and board Cousland was...."Why is he getting up in just about the same time it takes me to close and start hitting him again? Shouldn't I be able to quickly move in and follow up that awesome ass-plant I just made him do?"

Luckily, I know a couple of guys on the gameplay team, so I made a few suggestions, tipped well, that kind of thing. Seems to have worked out okay.

Crossing my fingers that this might make sword-and-board more interesting to play! Hmm, now I have to reconsider rolling a mage Hawke for my first playthrough ^_^

I barely even noticed this apparently dreaded "shuffle." Your dude runs up to the hurlock, bashes him. It doesn't take very long. I'm not sure what the issue is. :?

It becomes VERY apparent if, say, you see a group of darkspawn, they see you. You click on one, and charge in. They run towards you. Unfortunately, the one you had targeted is running toward one of your mages or archers or something. Instead of hitting him anyway, if you're not lucky landing a stun or something, you'll turn right around and chase him ALL the way back.

That's the most extreme example I have experienced, and it happened to me plenty. But on almost every enemy it's clearly noticeable, unless you just happen to be positioned perfectly to start with. Maybe you get used to it after a while, but if you sit back and look at it objectively it does look a bit silly.

I'm just going to add here that one note we're mentioning in the demo but hasn't come up in the thread: the section of the game that we're showing is deliberately over the top, and represents what it is like when someone is "exaggerating" your legend, as per the whole concept of the Frame Narrative.

Concerns that enemies die in one hit are a direct result of Hawke having good PR and thus excesisvely powerful during this part, not because our combat design reads "Hawke kills people in one hit."

In general, it's not a good idea to have people leaving your demonstration feeling like they got their asses kicked. We save that for boss battles in the real game.

Wow, that sounds really cool. That someone's opinion of you makes you stronger. Could they also exaggerate the size of the enemy army so you're like, "Oh great, now I have to fight a zillion of them."

Maybe it's just me but I'd love to leave a demo having had a thorough ass-kicking too. Just not too quick.

Ah yes, trying to melee a moving target can be a bit problematic. I wonder if they could add a new passive warrior talent to inflict interrupting attacks of opportunity automatically in such instances? Or maybe that would be superfluous with this new combat system they have devised.

Yeah, it never bothered me too much either. The pathfinding could be annoying at times when trying to attack with melee guys, so maybe this new stuff will smooth it out. I just hope its not over the top, legend or not, with Hawke bouncing around like a maniac hacking and slashing as he goes to the target.

I'm kind of torn on the whole "exaggeration" aspect of the story telling too. When I'm playing as Hawke I want to know that what I'm playing is actually what happened to Hawke, not some over the top 300 style retelling making all of the flashbacks one big "what if?" kind of situation. It just seems that having the framed narrative and playing as Hawke in the past makes it so you're not actually in control of Hawke and his rise to power, but rather just playing an imaginary Hawke in a potentially imaginary retelling of his tale. Just seems like its potentially setting up a "gotcha" moment when you eventually take over Hawke in present day. I mean, if the flashbacks are directed by the narrator, who is to say that Hawke ever actually met Flemeth or anything and it wasn't just an embellishment by the narrator? Ugh...

And when will we see some PC gameplay?

I actually think this is a really cool idea, having each segment influenced by the motives and perceptions of the narrator, but that's the kind of thing I'm really into so it's right up my alley.

well, i for one want to see some mage gameplay, and was there any info on a possible female playable whilst you guys were there? also, i know that the demo was on xbox , in dao the pc versions graphics were obviously more pleasing than that of the consoles. will this be the case again. i for one like the idea of a game looking nicer on the pc. simply because its the one "console" that will outlast the rest so to see graphics be used to their potential makes me far happier than when we see games dumbed down for consoles, and dont get me wrong i love consoles, but the pc graphics of DA:O kicked ass compared

its good that people from the forums have seen the game in action now and been impressed with the graphics especially with it being shown on the Xbox,  means us console players get a good looking game and the PC owners know they will get a better looking one :).  Looks good for all versions of the game being great :wizard:

The combat sounds ood. One thing that drove me nuts in Origins is when combat starts, I pause the game and issue commands, and then instead of rushing to carry out those commands my group rushes to position themselves in a pretty formation behind me. Huh?? I hope thats fixed. lol

Wouldnt judge the combat from the demo version people have seen, Mike said it was dumbed down, probably for the game journalists :P and after reading that ign article posted on the forum I believe it :D

Yeah but I mean they have apparently removed the delays between issuing a command and the character performing them.. Not related to dumbed down demo combat. :)

Been said the combat response has been speeded up so commands should be better :), was annoying to see an enemy you wanted to attack run past you and you dont hit them :P

had to laugh when saw that bit, when he said he thought they were Orcs :D, said he didnt know cus he wasnt a nerd. so asking questions about the game is nerdish :blink::D

for anyone who went to Comic-con

i have only 1 question

did DA2 still have those circles on the ground during combat?

like yellow circles for party members and red circles for enemies

I really hope they do include it. That's definitely a feature that would be a shame to lose, and very dissapointing.

Regarding the circles--I can't honestly remember seeing them--but it was quite a bit of sensory overload for me, so I just may not have mentally noted them.

Regarding what Mike was saying about the 'exaggerated legend' aspect of the combat demo was true.  I was at one of David's presentations, when Mike was reportedly at a meeting (i.e., Happy Hour ;)), but he definitely made it clear that was the case (Hawk performing as a myth-inflated Legendary hero).

And regarding Hawk's voice, I agree with Zhadow--it seemed right for the face of Hawk (i.e., no 'Mike Tyson' effect where you can't believe that voice is coming out of that head .  We didn't get to hear a ton of dialogue from Hawk, and it was in a crowded, less-than-silent room, but I didn't notice anything over-the-top about the voice.  Kind of a masculine British accent, maybe something along the lines of Clive Owen (that's a VERY rough approximation--just trying to paint in broad strokes here).  I was sitting next to a floor fan, so the hum of the fan motor was the loudest sound in the room for me.

One other comment--in my description of the graphics, I didn't mean to imply it looked amine; rather things seemed to have a more angular, sharp-edged look, with the overall atmosphere sliding a bit (just a bit) more toward a 'bio-mechanical' feel that an overtly organic one (if that makes any sense at all).  People will always nitpick, but I can't image the majority of players will have any issues with the graphics.

Anyhow, I'm heading back to the Con, and will try to stop by the BioWare room again to see if I can play more of the DLC on the PC, and maybe ask a few more questions of the guys (who, BTW seem very busy dealing with the hordes over a very long day of trying to placate the masses).

Ciao,

From what I heard, it sounds like the big rollout will be at the upcoming German convention, where BW will be presenting a full-fledged unveil (as opposed to this sneek peak, which we are are very grateful for, BTW :).)

OK--now I am leaving, for real!

I'm happy that people are happy with the demo, not too worried about wherether the combat is too easy since if it is I'll just up the difficulty. I hope they do put the top-down view in for PC and that we get a gameplay vid soon, PC or otherwise.

Other than that, on the subject of the shuffle, I just spent ages playing the ogre battle in the Tower of Ishal since the Ogre aggro'd on the circle mage I got given and I had to try and make it so the ogre would have to run past Alistair and my Dwarf Noble while chasing the mage so I could put some damage on him and try and get aggro back.

Hi Everyone

We've updated teh BioWare Blog with Day 1 impressions and such. You can check it out here: http://blog.bioware....con-blog-day-1/

As far as "when will we gt to see it if we're not at SDCC", you will have to wait for a while yet. Everyone coming in to the demo signs an NDA not to film or take pictures because our PR department and DA team have big plans that will be hitting in a few weeks. We do have requests from press groups to show it to you from here, we even had Geoff Keighley stop by the booth to check things out, but no dice. You'll need to be patient if you can't be here. Sorry.

Still, we know what you are waiting for is pretty damned cool, so buck up buttercup. Image IPB
