Check out the Game Informer cover art - Hawke doesn't look like he's toiling in battle, he looks like he's having a great time, cackling and growling insults as he spears his enemies.  There's no typical dull look of a trapped animal on his face in the screenshots, like there is for most of our avatars, especially in the pic with the ME wheel.  It's looking more like melancholy or rage or fear in his eyes, not tabula rasa.  I'm sure in the coming previews we're going to hear journalists praise the game's improved facial animation system, and I can't wait to see how much more detail they've put into the dialogue, BEYOND the writing.  I have a feeling it's going to improve leaps and bounds over Origins.

There's a lot to infer from the tidbits of info floating around when brought into perspective along with these screenshots.  I don't think we're going to see a bunch of people standing around looking blankly at eachother, or that plus a few canned animations of the player character crossing his arms or rubbing his chin.  I expect a lot more body language and emotional expressions on people's faces as they deliver their lines, and that's going to make their performances a lot more cinematic and dramatic.  Just like Woody from Toy Story is 30% Tom Hanks, 70% Pixar, I think we're going to see BioWare's animators take a bigger role in bringing Dragon Age 2's characters to life.

If I'm completely wrong, I think talented actors and actresses like Steve Valentine and Claudia Black proved that they could carry a 3D animated character when paired with a good writer, but I just can't get the "what if" images out of my head had Alistair and Morrigan delivered some of those really intense, important lines with a properly expressive face and body to punctuate what they were saying.  I think we're going to see Hawke make some legendary, really well respected mature game icons like Solid Snake and Kratos look like ridiculously juvenile, first draft scraps.

Well anything would be an improvement to having the character just stand around in the middle of conversations blank faced like a sack of meat.

The facial expressions, and really the faces themselves, have improved A LOT with the new art direction, so that opens up a lot of doors for giving more emotional and deep cutscenes and what not. It also depends on the voice actors for Hawke too. If they suck, it won't do much good.

He looks coc-eye'd, with a sticky on beard.
Also, why is Natalie Portman there?

Crazy eyed and patchy is a good thing, IMO.  Speaking as a Buccaneer-American, I find your belittling insinuation of my race offensive.

I have no idea why Natalie Portman is floating down into the fray looking all stoic, but it also looks awesome.
