Yes there should be a way to hide the helm.

Oh God yes please, the mage caps look flat-out ridiculous. Did a bunch of people actually sit down together in a room and decide that a cloth condom with a feather sticking out the top was the ideal way to showcase the mage-player's painstakingly created in-game avatar?

Make it just like Mass Effect (for each party member)

If it's a matter of looks... well this could be extended to many, many other things besides helmets and where would it stop? Toggle to wear only your under-garments, but receive full stats?
I know people want the best of both worlds, but still...

I understand this is a game and all, but isn't that part of the "role-playing" in a RPG? If you want to protect your face, you need to cover it. Yes, you can't see your face, but that makes sense doesn't it?

Slippery slope != valid argument.
Anyways, the line is arbitrary, yes, but helms seem like a sensable spot.

It makes sense to take off your helm when you're not in combat. TheMills Entari wrote...

damn thing is stuffy, restricts your hearing and perhiperal vision, and
looks hideous. If instead of just toggling off during cutscenes, you
could set it to toggle off anytime you're not in combat mode, but
toggle on whenever you draw your weapons, that would be ideal.

This.
Even with a tank build I'm not wearing a helmet.
