Features to improve/implement if there were a Jade Empire 2

reason). So if BW ever tackled Jade Empire 2, what would you've liked to have improved upon the first game? Is there are features that you think should have been implemented or expected from the sequel?
I've put this discussion here, because I figured that we can discuss spoilers here since it is what we wanted to improve upon from Jade Empire. If you didn't like the game (many people didn't like it or found it repetitive), what would you think would've made it a better game?
Discuss away!

Combat could also use a big overhaul so that fights aren't just flipping over a guy and hitting him in the back all the time.

The first thing which needs to be addressed is the combat. This is something people had a hard time with. I can understand it felt kind of unbalanced. There were times I felt like I wasn't even hitting the enemy. I would have to flip behind him to avoid the attack. Either way the enemy would still hit me. Jade Empire is supposed to be Bioware's cross of a Action game and RPG. I will not lie they were headed in the right direction, but it needed more tweaking and more of a balance to it. One part of the combat I liked though was when you were fighting in the collosium with the big beard guy and using the axes. Cutting off limbs what just plain great!
Story also I think needed some improvements as well. I've seen to many damned movies where the master betrays the student. These are plots which get old fast. I was really hoping that deaths hand was going to be the ultimate bad ass. I was hoping instead of being controlled he would have been the one to take over the empires power and try to become a living god, but your master beat him to it. Boring!. Now the part I loved about the story was the fact the god herself was being torchered to give the empire water. What this told me about Empires was there is a god and you can kill it so basically there most be more gods. These other gods could be used in sequels. I really feel though that Bioware if they were to make a sequel. They should give me an enemy of godly proportions and this enemy is literally immortal. Not my master please once is enough.
The graphics well, I would say just upgrade them.
The dialogue system. This is were I feel the ME wheel would be perfect. Jade Empire seamed like a cinematic experience in itself. It was definitely very good movie wise. It felt like an old chinese movie and that was fun. I think though with a conversation wheel and a preset character Bioware could tell the story better and it would be cheaper to make. It would also give us a chance to really work with the closed and open palms attributes better with conversation. They could also give us triggers. These are always good and with a martial arts type of games just image the possiblities.
companions- I think you should have a good set amount of companions, but make say about the size of MEs squad. If I remember correctly in JE you could only take two companions with you. Each one should feel like a real character. Someone with his or her believes and someone who would be willing to fight for your cause. I also think they should be able to change their looks say with an inventory system. This would give people more creativity with your character and the companions. The more creativity you give to the player the more they get into the game. Even though its an action type game. Its still an RPG and it needs an inventory system.
I can't think of anything else now, but I will pop on later today before work and hit this baby up again.

Story
More non-linearity. More plot twists. Better replay value. One different cutscene or one pissed off follower (instead of the other) is not enough. Different moral choices (good vs bad vs neutral) should affect the story (and hence subsequent choices) more deeply. Day/night cycle and seasonal change is also a must, and I don't mean just the landscape, also NPC's behaviour and availability.
Morality
Keep the OP/CF system but revamp it. If it boils down to good vs bad it'll be boring. If it's what Smiling Mountain explains at the very beginning, that's something else. I'm not saying that you can't be totally ruthless if you choose so, but it's wrong IMO to "reward" that equally (or more that) to CF behaviour.
World
Hmmm... other than bigger and better? I don't know... I guess also more variety in terms of architecture (from one city to another, especially if located in different regions of the empire). It's nice to see big, beautifully constructed buildings, but it's also nice to be able to visit them. Even in the Imperial City you couldn't enter more than 2-3 buildings (unless you count Necropolis and Black Leopard School too).

Also, it is far too difficult to master one philosophy or the other at a point in the game where it actually matters. Point gains need to be increased.

Let us also bring two party members with us so we can have one support us and one fight with us, this gives the player alot more choices.

My major gripe was the combat. It was unbalanced, clunky and not that fun. Good concept, but it was done poorly.

I think when this was made we got spoiled from BG and KOTOR. Plus we can get party banter which is always worth its weight in gold.

This game would then become even easier than it is now.kraidy1117 wrote...

Beef up the combat. In the first JE I felt like the party member was really useless IMHO.Wejki wrote...

The combat was mediocre, and frustratingly easy in the first game. Also, I don't like having nearly every power in the game available to me. I prefer some restriction.
2) Character creation
I want to customize my character, and not just it's face and skin color.
3) Having more than one squadmate when I travel
Not only that, they need to be more useful. I put most of the squadmates in support mode, because they suck at combat(sans The Black Whirlwind.)
4) Persuasion system
I don't like being forced to play one specific alignment for the entire playthrough. I want to mix it up like in ME1 and Dragon Age.
I'll come with more later.

If your talking about going back and forth all the time in the necropolis and fighting the ghosts over and over again I feel you. I after awhile I was hoping for a horse demon to appear just because I was so sick of looking at those damn ghosts.

Dawn Star really was a great help in Master Level being on support. Her support is good for healing + chi enhanced attacks.

The problem is that each attack from the Red Minister, the two ghosts, and I think the ghost lord will take a huge chunk out of your health and chi, the red minister gets healed in the process too. It's also the very cramped battle arena it takes place in that makes it so difficult.Alexine wrote...

1. 1. Updated
combat system, Bioware has made great progress in gameplay case in point Mass
Effect 2, or there is the aforementioned Arkham Asylum. Plenty of ways to dust-up the gameplay.
2. 1. OP/CF
was not too bad, but the ending deciding everything was too deux ex machine,
less sure on how to improve on that.
Storyline changes
1. Have NPCs romance each other, I personally think a Dawn Star/Sky romance
would have been cool) you could play matchmaker with the two.
2. Make more quarrels and even fights between opposite sided followers.
3. Add more mythical creatures such as
Qilins and Fenghuangs in the context of a “park ranger” mini game.

2/ Expand on the philosophies of OP and CF.
3/ Keep the RPG mechanics and don't let the presence of action oriented combat take full focus.
4/ Allow more choice in appearance, fighting style, beliefs be they religious philosophical.
5/ Romances.
6/ More then one companion allowed to follow.

On your gore comment. When you did the arena fighting you could hack enemies up. Also if you used long sword you could cut off your enemies head so you just want more gore and I highly agree with you on more than one follower. It would make better sense and it would add spice more to the conversations.

I dunno. Ninja Gaiden's combat was suitable for such a game as it was. But in the context of Jade Empire? Not really...

I don't know about religious philosophies. Yes, there is a lot of religious philosophies created in Asia, but most of them are hard to grasp even to Asian scholars (buddhism, taoism as examples) If BW truly wants to tackle it, then might as well make the game as long as Dragon Age: Origins and Awakening, ME1 and ME2 put together.

To have at least 2 companions with you.
I loved how you could influence your LI, we should see more of that with other characters.
Improve the reflex based combat system.
Lots of loot.

^I don't think that would happen. I doubt bioware will every make a game as long as Dragon age again. It seems to me the games are getting shorter and shorter story wise.
I think so as well. Coming what the impression I got from DA2, it will probably be the length of ME2 or something. But getting on topic, most games are moving to cater to a larger audience. And most casual gamers have a very short attention span in playing games.

I liked that as well. But the latest BW games (ME2 and DA:O) seemed to have removed that. I guess it makes the characters a bit shallow and easily manipulated.
