Will modders be able to make spears and bow strings with the toolset?

and light sabers, and guns, and miniature assault catapults that shoot trained assassin monkeys?

I'll settle for poorly trained assassin monkeys... or even untrained hampsters - so long as they have a scatter-shot effect.

Possibly. Spears will require a new group of animations for wielding. I'm not sure what you'd need for bowstrings.

Surely would like to see a mace and chain but that probably wont go. Considering the amount of blood splatter iwould have thought that a primary impact weapon from sheer velocity alone.

But then I love the mace and chain as a weapon with shield.

I certainly hope spears and bowstrings can be implemented...but spears would be a hassle due to the animations, as has been noted...

Can't wait to get my hands on this toolset! ^^

Bowstrings might be quite problematic. I mean, if they were easy, don't you think BioWare would have implemented them?

As soon as I saw the Dalish origins video I knew there would be a bowstring mod eventually. Certainly in cutscenes like that the lack of them is very jarring. I'd say the reason they didn't include them would be primarily be that they didn't think the framerate tradeoff for the extra polys was worth it. You could maybe call that another console concession. Added to that, there are all sorts of potential clipping issues which are basically unavoidable with no collision detection (same problem as the hair meshes). It is doable though.

Not sure if the feasibility of animated weapons was addressed but as that not being present is the reason for no bow strings (at least that's what I picked up from somewhere) it may not be an easy thing to just add. The issue includes whips and any flail type weapon all need the weapon to include animation though I guess having a static bow string would be the only one of those that could pass as acceptable(if not really an improvement on no string).

if it is indeed not in the game it would require an entire new set of character animations. Same goes for a spear, or any other non standard weapon and as far as I know finding good animators in the modding community is quite tough.

Then again one should be enough. :P

Unfortunately, yeah, they're not in the game. It's one of those things I never noticed until someone pointed it out, and then I couldn't stop seeing the missing bow strings. Sigh. I was so much happier...

I know watching gameplay videos I almost never notice. But it can be kinda jarring in cutscenes.

Hey, I know someone made a rifle with grenade launcher for NWN.

They could probably create some action animations too. I do remember that for NWN, someone's hak made characters in melee battles look like they were fencing (thrust forward, step back, weave side to side etc, even if it was a little stiff). Cool.

Now that is something that is missing from all games, where characters tend to have the ability to absorb huge amounts of punishment. XD

Personally I blame PnP RPG's for that tradition. :P

The problem with mods requiring custom animation is generally not so much finding animators, it's how difficult it is importing new animations into the game. Hopefully it shouldn't be an insurmountable task if the toolset lives up to expectations.

well i haven't investigated the ability to add automatic combat animations. but adding animations is easy. you have a animation editor in the toolset and you can setup how the creature animations should play out. not sure how the interaction works. ie if holding spear play this animation when attacking. at the builder event we bearly touched the subject beyond seeing a hugh web reprsenting the humanoids animation spreedsheet.
