The first DA game took four years to make. The sequel has a 16-month development cycle. I have a feeling that we're going to get a much smaller and shallower game with fewer items, NPCs, party members, romance options, etc. Mass Effect 3 appears to be getting almost two full years of dev time yeat the new Dragon Age looks like it's going to be rushed. Is there ANY chance that the team might get a delay?

When the game was delayed for console port, didn't they add, like, 50-100 quests or something, in two weeks? Or was that just the crappy MMO billboard quests?

Well, they aren't starting from scratch in DA2, or starting a whole new world. So, it would make sense that it would be faster, because they have the setting all made and can get right to writing the plot and development.
Edit: They have the basic combat system down, maybe they will improve here and there, they have all the classes set up, maybe a tweak or two, they have many animations done that can be recycled, etc.
50 to 100 quests? I don't think it was that many, probably was the billboard stuff, but I remember something about working on Shale during that time period... maybe I'm wrong.

oh look its THIS thread again...
also turnaround on sequels is usally shorter because engine is completed only writing, concept art, assets, scripting, upgrades and bug killing remains and i hear that engine is the biggest time sink (probably horribly wrong but thats my understanding of the process if a bioware guy want's to correct me please go ahead)

Well that's an original question we certainly haven't had before.
Thing is, DAO also had a new engine being made. For DA2 they already have the engine and they have a background story laid down. Makes it go a lot faster. Either way can't say anything about it just yet with the info we have.
Also ME3 is also said to be released somewhere next year, which doesn't make it two years.

It's plenty of time. Building a game and entire universe from scratch is going to take much longer then reusing the majority of components from an already existing game.

Much of a game's dev time relates to the engine. They have an engine, now all they are doing is reskinning graphics, scripting quests, etc. Doesn't take nearly as long. I agree though that more time should have been given.

All that said, we haven't heard anything about anticipated play time yet - so far as I'm aware - so you are correct in that it might not run 60+ hours like the original did ... and considering they have to pay for more voice acting I'm guessing it will be a little shorter ... but until something is said for certain, we'll just have to wait and see.

Aside from the fact that it is BioWare's busisiness
(it will be available when they think a game is fit for release)
Anything confirmed on that 16 months theroy?
- they could've started working on it back in 2005.
So far my opinion before the lockdown strikes.

Yeah guys I'm sure they'll have plenty of time to make more than five dungeons and fully flesh out the three-act story.

Is December National Necro Your Thread to Work Day or something? Good lrod, I haven't seen this many undead threads since I stitched a mummy costume.
Note; I do not actually have the ability to sew. I have also never sewn, worn or owned a mummy costume.
People's comments here that there was not needing a new engine to be built look to be slightly misinformed. Or, at least, I BELIEVE they are. DA2 did have a new engine (a revamping of an old engine, but they looked to have reworked most of it from the ground up) and art and combat style. Which means a 16 month dev cycle WAS cutting it way too short.

Please don't resurrect a year-old thread.
End of line.
