I'm a little amazed I haven't seen this quote from the Game Informer article come up yet.
"What we want to do is give the player more depth of choice. So you might really like the fireball. We're going to let you customize and enhance the fireball itself, so by the end of the game you're actually tailoring that spell to the way you want it to be."
Also,
"Fewer abilities overall, but more ways to customize them as the player prefers."
Now, I have seen people complain that this means that DA2 is going to take away a lot of player choice when it comes to abilities, but it doesn't sound like that to me...

I started a thread about this (I'm scared they'll take away too many spells). I hope you're right and that we do have a large amount of choice. It really depends, in my opinion, on just how in-depth the customization is. Hopefully they aren't just talking a big game (like they did with spell combos). I might sound harsh, but I really am excited to see how this system works.

It's interesting to think about. It could be really cool, it could not be. Jury's out until more is revealed or game's released, I guess.

Y'know, someone raised a very interesting theory in another thread about this. I think it may be possible to put more than one point in a spell, thereby increasing your options with it. Maybe one point in fireball is the basic spell, 2 allows you to make it bigger or smaller, and 3 allows you to make it target one person or something.
