hi custom content creators^^

i tried to model an elminster like hat. yeah i know, it's more or less a stereotyped one but there are no decent hats for wizards within the dragon age universe :D

anyway after fidling around with the base human male head i noticed that i can't blend out the hair because this will left the pc with only one half of the head. sadly the missing part will be noticable. in nwn2 you were able to partly blend out covered hair - at least i read about this. is this also possible in dragon age: origins or is there only the "delete complete hair" option available?

Image IPB

ps: if there are texture creators out there i would be glad if they could do (or assist me) some good 2d art. i am horribly lacking with this^^

It seems different helmet types hide different parts of the head -- some disable the head model entirely (massive helmets and such) while some leave the face part. I don't know if any headwear type disables just the hair, nor if it's hard-coded or maybe possible to control in some way.

You can possibly work around it by making the back part of the head part of the hat model itself. The geometry can be taken from any of the hairstyle models

As tmp7704 alluded to, headwear in DA replaces either the scalp/hair mesh or the entire head. There's no way to make a hat that does what you want. You'd have to make a separate custom item for every single hairstyle to do that. Hence why Bioware just went with their weird skullcap things. You'll have to tweak it so that everything above the join between the scalp and face meshes is hidden which, as you have discovered, is going to be especially problematic for the back of the head.

That's such a cool hat that I'd love to have it even if the hair problem can't be cracked. Maybe it could be an NPC-only item that covers the rest of the "hair" area with a fixed appearance such as bald skin or hair of constant shape and colour?

You could make it as a head preset or just a custom hair for either an NPC or PC rather than an equippable item. Then maybe make an invisible item that gives you the required stats so that the hat is not removed when the item is equipped.

you could include the back part of the head (the scalp) as part of the hat model and use a similar technique that arms use to "lift" the skin tone from the player character. We've done this on a turban hat so pretty sure this works.

It might also be possible to do a "generic hair" shape that tucks it up into the hat, or else hangs down in a way which look plausible for a variety of hair styles. I would hope it is possible to lift the hair colour, again, from the player.

Might this suit your needs? Of course, baldies would wonder where their hair came from, and one "generic hair" will not suit all hair styles, but its certainly a lot less work than creating dozens of models, which isnt really practical.

seems like i have to sacrifice hair :D

i could also do 2 hat versions but i think there is no function to call which hair model the player have chosen.
