Be your own character's voice!

So a lot of people are upset over voiced characters because it "puts a voice-actor between you and your character". Perhaps you wouldn't have stressed the "your" in "what about your fruit" quite so much while flirting with leliana, and so despite choosing the line yourself it feels like the voice-actor is asserting his own influence/interpretation. ;)

What if I told you that YOU could be the voice-actor for your character? The idea came to me while watching Toegoff's awesome Let's Play of Dragon Age on youtube. What I really liked about that LP was how everytime Toegoff clicked on a dialogue option he would read it out loud in-character, the way he imagined his elf would say it! When the npc and he went back-and-forth in that way, Toegoff the Berserking elf did not seem mute at all!

"But wait!" you might say, "talking out loud to ourselves and then clicking on the dialogue option would make us look, and feel, like complete dorks! Toegoff could only do that because he had an audience! It would also ruin the cinematic feel switching perspectives and panning by your companions *during* Mike Hawke's epic speech to Kirkwall!"
A valid concern. But wait... we have the technology! Posted Image

You know how when calling customer service for phone companies you almost never get a real person on the oher end? And the compuer voice just asks you "If you're calling about tech support, press 1. To ask about your subscription, press 2.  Para ayuda en Espanol, etc."

Lately companies like AT&T have tried to make this process less impersonal with a rather neat gimmick: the computer voice will say "please enter or say your customer code" at which point you read out your number, and the computer almost always accurately understands! Posted Image

Of course this means you will have to buy a mike headset or a webcam, but who doesn't use skype these days?

So far I've only seen this technology used for numbers and short phrases like "Please repeat that".
If that is the limitation of the technology, then perhaps the text of the dialogue you begin reading will highlight each word it registers you saying as you say it, similar to a Sing-a-long video (remember those? I learned English watching Disney Sing-a-long movies :P)

Take this line for instance:
"Enough is ENOUGH! I have HAD IT with these DUSTER-SODDING SHRIEKS on the MONARCH'S FERELDAN TERRAIN!"
Posted Image
As you read the line from the dialogue wheel, the words you've read turn blood-red, because in Dragon age everything turns bloody.
Posted Image
When you get to "ENOUGH!" the camera will suddenly switch to an obese dwarf who turns to look at you in shock!
Then a close up of Mike's face, which unfocuses and pans across your party member's reactions as you continue to read the line. Upon registering you say "Terrain", the game goes back to Mike, who pulls out his sword/staff/bow and charges dramatically!

There could also be the "wait, nevermind" feature, which allows you to switch what dialogue choice you were going to make halfway. The game could register certain stock phrases like "No, I've changed my mind" or "wait, nevermind", which will un-highlight what you've said so far and you can start over. This can be used not just as a back-tracking tool, but a role-playing tool! It can really help you demonstrate how uncertain your Hawke is: how hard this decision is for him! (Maybe you can get a slightly less dissaproval for starting to agree with Morrigan before changing your mind and disagreeing!)

I admit that much more thought has to be put into this idea before it can be realistically implemented, but if done right it would solve one of the big problems people have with DA2!

EDIT:
Just to clarify, we won't be able to just say whatever and expect the game to understand. With this system we would have to read out the dialogue option word-for-word.
But since everyone seems to like the length and the amount of dialogue options for DA1, if we just have the same in DA2 but you can read it aloud instead of clicking on the text, I think everyone will be satisfied!

There is no way for this to be realistically (or even accurately) done.

I dont use skype >_>;;

but see, here is the thing, this would probably be like brain age...and i have issues with brain age (so do many of my friends for that matter) because often, I'll say a word like "Blue" and it won't understand what I am saying....so I see infront of my DS say "blue" over and over and over....and then I get a brain age of 72 because the game didn't register my answer >_>;;

While this sounds really, really cool, I don't think it's possible.

I'd totally read Hawke's lines out loud though if I don't like Lady Hawke's voice, but then the problem with that is on the dialouge wheel it doesn't tell you what exactly you're supposed to say. Hmm, maybe I'll just turn subtitles on and do it that way. Posted Image

But yeah, if we had the technology for this, it would be mega awesome. You know what would be really cool? If you could say anything and not have to choose from a set list, but that will probably never ever happen except in my imagination. Posted Image

Ah well. You're probably right. Maybe with a breakthrough in a few years we can have this for DA3?

Thanks for reading and bearing with me, everyone! ^_^

That's.... a lot more simple than what the OP is talking about.

No, I don't want to be known as the crazy person in my apartment complex yelling strange video-game lines to myself.

How about you encourage the team to implement motion controls while you're at it?

Haha true. But if you set the game to a volume matching your own voice I think people who hear you will understand what's going on.

...though personally I would have been yelling at Alistair "DON'T YOU DARE STAB THAT ARCHDEMON!"
The one time he doesn't listen to me and gets himself killed. Heartbreaking :(

I read my lines out loud anyway, because yes, I am a dork! :D

Edited to add:

And I read with feeling, because I don't want the other voice actors to upstage me!

This. That if someone is in the room with you while you are playing. Romance scenes would be creepy.

I'd give anything to have a game like that! Do you know how cool that would be?! To say anything and have the characters respond. Think of the possibilites... We probably won't be around to see it though, if it will even happen.Posted Image

haha I already talk to the characters anyway. Honestly, if anyone was around to hear me I'd probably get thrown in the mental instituon. Posted Image .... well I'm not completely insane. Usually I'm just yelling at them for dying or something... excpet when Morrigan offered the Dark Ritutal to sleep with Alistair I was like, having a major fangirl 'don't you dare touch him!! freak out.

Yes, that was very cruel to all girls who romanced Alistair. The only way to live happily ever after with him is to let him sleep with Morrigan :'(
(hopefully you already de-flowered him by that point? ;) haha)

Alistair was my human noble's best bud, and I was honestly more inclined to have my character himself die than let him go. I really wasn't expecting him to take the choice out of my hands.
Even so, I wasn't going to do Morrigan's ritual. The Old Gods were trouble even before being turned into archdemons.

But I digress. You mentioned you wanted a game where you could speak even without following the dialogue options?
Hmm... If you could say anything you want to a character in Thedas and have them reply in character, what would you say and to who? >:D
