I admit that much more thought has to be put into this idea before it can be realistically implemented, but if done right it would solve one of the big problems people have with DA2!

I'd like to start off by saying that there is absolutely no way that this is going to be implemented into DA2. Even if they wanted to do something so radically new and different they wouldn't because a) the software to do voice recognition has to be licensed seperately which will cost and B) at this point they have their work cut out for them actually finishing the game in time (judging by the environments in the released screens).

Bearing all that in mind, I actually really like your idea. It would be really awesome to be able to shout your choice of dialogue at the screen and see the NPCs react to what you say rather than just clicking a choice on the screen. The only issue I see is that voice recognition is still far from perfect. You notice when they have those automated systems on phones that you have to speak quite slowly and clearly for the computer to recognise what you've said (it also seems to have trouble when you're speaking angrily through gritted teeth when your broadband has broken for the 4th time that year, I know this from personal experience). It would also have to be an option (I feel like a dick talking to people over Skype when there's other people around already) and cost to benefit probably wouldn't be worth it to the kinds of companies who make RPGs, e.g. smaller companies with smaller budgets who are alread stretched thin making their games work.

Great idea though.

No, I don't want to be known as the crazy person in my apartment complex yelling strange video-game lines to myself.

Haha true. But if you set the game to a volume matching your own voice I think people who hear you will understand what's going on.

...though personally I would have been yelling at Alistair "DON'T YOU DARE STAB THAT ARCHDEMON!"
The one time he doesn't listen to me and gets himself killed. Heartbreaking :(

haha I already talk to the characters anyway. Honestly, if anyone was around to hear me I'd probably get thrown in the mental instituon. Posted Image .... well I'm not completely insane. Usually I'm just yelling at them for dying or something... excpet when Morrigan offered the Dark Ritutal to sleep with Alistair I was like, having a major fangirl 'don't you dare touch him!! freak out.

Yes, that was very cruel to all girls who romanced Alistair. The only way to live happily ever after with him is to let him sleep with Morrigan :'(
(hopefully you already de-flowered him by that point? ;) haha)

Alistair was my human noble's best bud, and I was honestly more inclined to have my character himself die than let him go. I really wasn't expecting him to take the choice out of my hands.
Even so, I wasn't going to do Morrigan's ritual. The Old Gods were trouble even before being turned into archdemons.

But I digress. You mentioned you wanted a game where you could speak even without following the dialogue options?
Hmm... If you could say anything you want to a character in Thedas and have them reply in character, what would you say and to who? >:D

Yes, I did de-flower him long before that. lol Can you imagine how traumatized Alistair would be if he had his first time with wild Morrigan? lol It was cruel how the only way to have a happy ending was for Alistair to sleep with Morrigan. But now that I think about it, guys had it worse cause Morrigan just leaves them no matter what! So I guess I'd rather have Alistair sleep with another woman than have him disappear forever. You poor, poor fanboys!Posted Image Although I'm curious, what is the appeal of Morrigan? If I were into girls, I'd take Leliana over her. She's so sweet!

So you didn't do the ritual then Kritanakom?

Anyway, to answer your question... um... I'm not sure. haha I'd have to think about it. I'd probably go through first being normal, but then second playthrough I'd probably be a major crazy person who went around insulting npcs and flirting with everyone. lol What would you guys do?

Poor, poor Alistair. There are far worse things than swooping and frog-morphing Morrigan can do to a good guy like him. :P

Morrigan does have the unique hairstyle and clothing going for her. ;)
She did appeal to me at first, but then I realized she would grow up to be just. like. Flemeth. (Both physically and in personality.)
Leliana is indeed very sweet, though she is not a two-dimensional damsel in distress by any means. After playing her DLC I can't make myself romance anyone else in the game! It is often said that Morrigan represents Dragon Age's unique atmosphere, but I think Leliana's optimism and belief in the magical despite the betrayal and ugliness she goes through better fits the theme.

No, I didn't do the ritual. All the power of an old god placed in the most unstable thing in the universe: a person.
I don't trust Morrigan not to raise that God-baby to destroy the world.

Edit: No scratch that, I would ask Zevran for tips. (what I mean by "tips" is up to your own interpretation... Posted Image

People are mistaken to ever think that they are playing 'their' character. It is never 'their' character unless it is an original pen and paper creation of theirs. Every Cousland is owned by Bioware. Every Mage, Elf, in the Dragon Age world, is Bioware's character that you may, if they see fit, control.

But it is never and WAS never 'your character.'

The sense of entitlement is completely false. They are entitled to nothing. Bioware games will sell well, regardless, because they are simply good quality games.

So to sum up: Bioware likes voices because it is basically the trick of their sleeve. Mass Effect1/2 were nearly revolutionary in terms of immersion, and it was completely a Bioware innovation, and one that has never gotten a single poor review, [people who hate the voices aside]

So of course they will keep at it - Cinematic adventures seperate them from the competition and are just cooler to showcase than DAO ever was.

Ah well, maybe in a few years it can be implemented in DA...4? 5?

Thanks, though! :)

I think the point is that we prefer unvoiced because we prefer a mental process rather than an aural one. I know I don't plan to sit and read dialogue lines out loud anytime soon. :)

I'll assume you meant "oral"?

If that's true then I wish everyone would just say that, because I'm never sure at any given moment why the fans are so very upset about voiced characters.

Most claim that it takes control of the character away from the player... and as far as your character's voice goes, the most control you could possibly have is replacing it with your own voice :P

I don't understand any of this, at all. What would be the difference to just saying what's written outloud? You're still hearing your own voice depicting what's on screen.

Plus, there are those of us who don't have such suave and charming voices. Don't forget those who roleplay as the opposite gender.

*Gruff*: Alistair, get over here and lay one on me

Alistair: Maker, you're beautiful.

HELNAW. I hate having to talk to my computer. Give me my dialogue wheel and I'm content.

Lol, you have a point with the opposite gender thing. But I doubt anyone hates their voice so much that they can't bear to listen to themselves read a few lines. I guess I'd recommend using this feature only when alone, or with similarly nerdy friends? :D

I suppose, as someone mentioned earlier, we would have to be able to switch this feature on and off. That probably means it wouldn't be worth the cost of implementing an interaction system that only some people will use, and only sometimes. :(
Oh well, we can dream, can't we?

My Character had my voice in Origins. Felt like I was taking because I was reading it in my head. Now I have got to watch some gypsy talking in DA2.

Pretty sure I'm just going to say "How 'bout goodbye?" for every conversation in ME3. Just sayin'...

Actually, just thought I'd jump in and say that he was right with the usage of aural.

It's voice I/O, though. Does kinect have a connectionist network that has to be trained to your voice, though?

Who are you to say what someone's own immersion level was. When you have so much freedom in choosing the background of the protagonist, that means you can mold a character to your liking. If choosing a character's look, background, and personality doesn't mean he/she is your own, then I guess we aren't even entitled to our own lives.

Mass Effect 1 and 2 were not revolutionary with the use of voice protagonists have you ever heard of Deus Ex. Yeah, I guess Dragon Age: 2 was good quality with their whole 3 dungeons and enemies appearing from thin air. Maybe next time they will spoil us and put in a 4th dungeon.
