I played ME1 as Engr, with a bonus skill of sniper rifle from a previous soldier playthrough. If I import my Engr to ME2, can he use a sniper rifle as an Engr? From what I can determine so far, the answer is no, but I'm hoping I'm wrong

How useful is sniper rifle in ME2?? It was excellent in ME1, really a life-saver many times!!

thnx for any help/advice

It doesn't import.

However...and I do say this with fair warning...

*SPOILER ALERT!!!!!*

Later in the game you to go an enemy base where you can pick another weapon to specialize in. You can select sniper rifle. In NG+, you will be able to use it from the start - afaik.

If you like your setup, i.e. engineer with sniper rifle, you could change classes when you import.

Infiltrator plays more like that than the ME2 engineer, which is a fair bit more of a spellcaster than anything else.

I do love the engineer, though. The pistol is extremely accurate at range, so I guess you could also 'snipe' with a pistol until you pick up a sniper rifle halfway through the game.

Or you could just mod the coalesced.ini file so the engineer starts with whatever you want.

I guess I'll wait, I'm just starting out on the 1st planet, and have yet to see any opportunity to have used a sniper rifle anyway. Combat seems to be a herd of enemies charging you at once, much different from ME1

There's plenty of locations where a Sniper Rifle comes in handy. It really does depend on what sort of Sniper Rifle you're carrying, too. The Viper has such a high rate of fire it functions more like a battle rifle, while the Widow packs such a massive punch it's similar to a Sniper with Master Assassination from ME1 on every shot.

The Mantis is most like ME1's sniper rifle, but it's limited in it's use, while the Incisor is basically a Vindicator with a scope.
