For me, the party banter was some of the best dialogue in Origins. I wonder if Hawke will be able to join in with the banter this time considering that he/she is fully voiced unlike the Warden.

It would be interesting, although I think that it would significantly lower the immersion because Hawke would be spontaneously talking with the other party members, without you telling him to do so. Even with a ME-style dialogue system, you, the player, are the one telling him what and when to say. You are him, or at least you should be since this is a role-playing game.

With Leliane and Alistair in the party during one of the main
quests you can already join their banter in Da O.

Options:

- Stop it - this isn't the point here!
- I agree with Alistar.
- No - Leliana is right about that.

neither choice seems to have any consequence  aside from ending
the banter.

Aside from budget and time schedule I see no reason against that
content in RtP.

They could do the banter like KOTOR.

My example is within a running convo with another npc,
just before opting pro or con some possible actions.

A good system for banter would be the one used in Awakening, only not for full conversations this time. Just for short specific observations between you and your companions depending where you are in the world. It would almost be the same thing like the bridges in Lothering or Orzammar

Hopefully not imo. He could reply with a totally out of character remark.

The problem with the Awakening one is that it doesn't happen while running. The best part of the system in Origins is that it helps make running around more entertaining, whereas stopping to talk would kind of defeat that. ME2 had a good system I think where it was just small comments on the area.

Maybe they could introduce some spontaneous dialogue initiated by a party member, alongside with the DA:O style banter. Like the discussions you used to have in Baldur's Gate 2 with your party members; I remember Arie used to talk to you in the most inappropriate situations.

During which main quest was this? I don't remember that at all. And furthermore I do pretty clearly remember reading a post by a dev saying the PC *couldn't* join in on banter without turning it into a full-on dialogue scene for various reasons.

Broken circle, mage's quarters, 1 room after Owain's stockroom near the staircase.
The banter starts when the surviving female bloodmage of a group of 3 pleads for
a chance to atone for her deeds and join the chantry - of course only if opted
against killing her at the start of the convo.

I'm currently playing NIER and there's a lot of banter between main hero and his companions. And it's actually great part of the game. That said, NIER is an action, and I imagine in an RPG, like DA2, this would be absolutely awesome.
