Because long hair looks ugly in the engine Mass Effect uses. Look at Miranda's it is static and never moves and just looks plain ugly sometimes.

All hair models clip. I've seen the sideburns from a couple of the maleshep hair choices clip with the side of his face.

Is Unreal Engine really that bad with soft bodies?  They had them in Splinter Cell and they looked pretty good (admittedly not hair, but that is a 6ish year old game on an older version of the engine).  I always thought they avoided soft bodies because they would have to render so many different styles, but I could just be ignorant.

Edit: sorry for being off topic.  In my 10 second mind-parse of actors, I came up with Sean Maher (Simon from Firefly).  He's well built and, according to the girls I know that have seen Firefly, apparently attractive.  To the guy who said Nathan Fillion (Mal, from Firefly):  he just doesn't have the build for it.  The guy is a fantastic actor, but I really don't think he looks like a soldier.  Of course that is merely my opinion.

I think it has to do with the fact that short hair is easier graphic wise. And maybe beacuse it makes more sense to have short hair when in battle (still, think about those silly shoes she and MIranda are wearing:lol:). But sure, strange, just as strange as there are no men with long hair to.
