First, I understand XP's gained are spread among all the party (even those that stayed back in the camp). So, the question is if there any advantage for a character in being the one that "makes the final kill" (when the XP gain shows on top of his/her head). Does he/she get those points exclusively, or maybe a bonus?
Second. Since XP's are spread among all the party, might there be an advantage in sending away some of the characters you don't use too much? My point is, if this might reduce the number of characters in the party, resulting in more XP's for those that remain (since the XP's would be divided among less people).
Following the same reasoning, might it be a good idea to delay the joining of some characters like Shale or Ogren? So the XP's gained by the party (without them) are divided among less characters, resulting in higher level gains, and then when those additional characters finally join they will have those levels anyway for free (because new characters usually join at a similar level as the party has at that moment)?
I don't know if I explained myself clearly. It's a little convoluted.

I have noticed a little bit of difference after cleaning an area if I made the kill, but only a few XP (ie; less than 10). Not worth the effort of a reload unless it is something you wish to kill yourself.
As far as the rest, never noticed any benefit to running less than a full party. In fact, the dialogues are worth any XP that might be floating around in the game.

As far as I'm aware, every party member gets the XP shown over the head of the character who makes the killing blow, not a fraction of it. I don't level up any faster on a Solo run than I did with a full party. Therefore, there is no point to reducing the number of people in your party, as you wouldn't be getting any more experience for each person.
Also, party members left at camp gain 0 experience. Instead, every time the Warden levels up, the game checks the level of anyone not in the party. If their level is 2 levels or more below the Warden's current level, then their level is boosted to be one level below the Warden. So if you pick up Oghren when he's at Level 12, and the Warden hits Level 14, the game will give Oghren 0 experience, but boost his level to 13 to keep up with the Warden.

I remember reading about this somewhere, but I can't find it now. What I remember is that the player with the killing blow gets full xp, all other party members who are alive get somewhere around 94% of that, and those that are dead at the time get around 90%. For those who aren't in your party, ^ what swk3000 said.
