The char was an Elf Mage with almost everything in Magic. Specilized in Arcane Warrior for the sustain that gives 75% resist All, plus Rock Skin, Arcane Defense, Wisp (Buff SP), and Aura the gives HP for dead bodies. It's great how most stuff does 1-4 Damage per hit and you can stand in the middle of your own AOE like Inferno and only take 3-4 Damage a tick while everyone else takes 20 Dmg. I even ended up soloing the Archdemon with that character as everyone else died mid fight while it was at 50% HP.

Then in the fight I found the Stone Golem very useful but I did switch to the fire guy for phase 2 when Sloth turning into a fire demon.
Make sure you position your ranged guys FAR away from the boss because he uses some pretty nasty AOE in the final phase. Wiped 3 times due to that. You need to stun him when he starts casting it.
Also don't forget about the lyrium veins which heal you.
This was the toughest fight in the game for me so far. Use lots of stuns. If your golem's abilities are all on cooldown, switch to normal form and shield bash or throw a spell or do whatever you do, then switch back.

For the other sloth forms, I switched to spirit when he started throwing heavy magic around, and I think he shifted to something with fireballs at one point, so I just went to fire form myself.
But golem and spirit can easily get you through. Just don't worry too much about him whacking you down, he'll stop at some point.

I think I'm too early to be attempting the Sloth Monster. I had come to the Circle Tower to recruit the mages to assist me with a quest back at the Castle. I opened the door to the Sloth and found myself in the Fade scenario. I'm only a level 8 warrior, so I think it's much too soon for this. Should I restore to an earlier point and just not go in that door?
As I always do the Circle first, I finish the tower at level 9. So 8 will be just fine in there. And to avoid it you would have to load from before you went into the tower anyway, cause that door is the ONLY way to progress through the tower to the end and Gregoir has the one on the ground floor locked till Irving is either rescued or dead.

Enemies seem to scale with your level (High Dragons and other "world bosses" being possible exceptions) as I've completed the 4 initial quests in varying order, and no combination seems to make one particular level really easier or harder (outside of higher level = more abilites/stats).
OP:
Try reloading to the auto-save just before facing the sloth demon. If you don't want to go through the whole Fade quest again, there is a mod on Dragonagenexus.com that let's you skip directly to the Nightmares and skip the 4 mini-dungeons. (The mod works very well in my experience, and once you kill Sloth, you get updated with all the XP, Codex entries, and the special stat increases, just as if you finished it yourself. One of my fave mods as the Lost In Dreams is my least favorite part of the game)

I'm playing the PS3 version, so I don't think I can use this mod. But thanks, your advice is helpful. I'll complete the circle before I come back to the Sloth's door.
I'm playing my Grey Warden as my primary character. He is joined by a senior madge we picked up in the lower levels of the circle. If I enter the Sloth's room with the mage selected, will she be the character doing the quests, or will I revert to my Grey Warden?

I really wasn't expecting such a diversion so early in the story line, as I was really attempting to build a good party for adventuring, but along the way, I'm building my GW up, so I guess it's ok if/when I defeat the Sloth monster.
